ESTATE HEAD GARDENER
An experienced Head Gardener is needed for a historic private estate on the James River in Virginia. The grounds consist of approximately 30 acres of formal gardens, surrounded by original boxwood shrub borders, mature native and ornamental trees and meadows. The original brick house and surrounding structures and paths are planted with extensive Boxwood groups and hedges that are to be maintained with care. Numerous garden rooms are currently being designed to be installed along with large-scale bulb plantings, a native meadow, vegetable and cutting garden. A coastal native restoration project will be implemented as well. Established gardens feature signature flowering shrubs, perennials and bulbs. A small greenhouse will be used for propagation and overwintering of temperennials and annuals.
The ideal candidate for this position is a true dedicated plantsman with a keen interest in sustainability and organic horticultural practices, with leadership skills. He or she should be independently-motivated, flexible, hard- working, and creative. He or she can lead and work cheerfully with a diverse and close knit group of individuals dedicated to the craft of estate gardening.
The Head Gardener position requires a knowledgeable, highly-organized individual with a good eye for excellent care and management for the grounds, including:
-Pruning and maintenance of the shrub borders and other garden plantings -Planting and care of perennial beds and containers
-Vegetable garden and fruit tree care
-Lawn care, mowing and leaf removal
-Develop and implement an organic IPM schedule
-Irrigation System management
-General upkeep of the grounds, garden buildings, and equipment
Written communication for reporting Team management
The Head Gardener will work with both existing garden staff and the closely with outside Landscape Designer, Arborist, and other Landscape Contractors to maintain the gardens at the highest level.
Position to be filled mid-winter to allow for an ambitious planting season commencing in March.
Qualifications: BS in horticulture or equivalent; 5 years or more experience in estate gardening, native plants and restoration, including staff supervision; familiarity with garden equipment, including basic maintenance.
