At Happy Cooking, we are passionate about building restaurants that feel like home. While each restaurant has it's own personality, they're grounded by the kindness of the people that work in them and the quality of the hospitality they provide. We have high expectations for our services and work hard to achieve them. We also have high expectations for how we care for and treat one another, so it doesn't feel like a stretch to call our team a "restaurant family". It's been more than 15 years since we first opened our doors on a bustling corner in the West Village. Today, Joseph Leonard, Jeffrey's Grocery, Fairfax and Sailor carry the torch.

We are looking for a Assistant Beverage Director who's knowledgeable, organized, articulate, and emotionally intelligent, to aid in the administration and execution of our beverage programs.

The position requires a demanding mix of on-the-floor experience, communication, beverage smarts, and buying acumen. It's a leadership role that supports our diners, our dining room teams, our fellow managers, and the business. In our system, the Assistant Beverage Director is predominantly a floor management position.

A successful candidate has a high degree of knowledge and comfort speaking about food, wine and spirits, leads the service teams by example, has an educator's mindset, makes exciting selections and cost efficient buying decisions, and is not intimidated by inventory management in a busy environment with limited storage.

The Day to Day:

  • Lead the service team and be active on the floor - a majority of one's time in this position is dedicated to the leadership of dining room services.
  • Represent the program's wines, spirits and beverages through direct education, guest interactions, and reference material.
  • Conscientious purchasing that strikes the balance between new product, healthy inventories, and program performance.
  • Assistants in the management of receiving, storage, and organization of all beverage products.
  • Constant anticipatory communication with management colleagues about menus, new product, deliveries, inventory, education, costing, and performance.
  • Prepare for and execute ongoing beverage education encompassing wine, cocktails, spirits, tea, and coffee.
  • Create education and service materials to support all aspects of the beverage programs, from wine tech sheets and cocktail recipes to tea info and storage maps.
  • Coach the team! Offer specific, constructive, individual feedback for improvement and deliver high fives when a job is well done.
  • Stay on track with all assigned administrative duties and manage deadlines.

Who You Are:

  • A Leader. Someone who sets the highest standards for their teammates and themselves, isn't afraid to ask for what they need and is skilled at delivering a message that will be well-received.
  • Organized, efficient and adaptable. You make plans, but you know how to adapt them when the situation changes.
  • Not afraid to roll up your sleeves and do whatever is called for to make the moment - or the month - successful.
  • Interested in personal growth and open to constructive feedback.
  • An expert communicator, both written and verbal
  • Detail oriented. From marking tables to menu edits to thorough post shift breakdowns.
  • Kind, warm, welcoming and empathetic
  • Loves hospitality. If figuring out how to put a smile one every person's face is what you want to do with your career, keep reading.
