Serves as crew leader and performs skilled manual labor in various duties such as cleaning ditches and placing sideline and cross line pipe, installing or repairing driveways, slope repairs, bridge repairs, sidewalk and curb repairs, catch basin repairs, vegetation management, or variety of other activities related to work request operations. Operates medium and heavy equipment such as motor grader, backhoe, front-end loader and belt loader in maintaining earth shoulders, roadside ditches, and outfall ditches to provide the proper drainage of roadway surfaces. Assists in devising a schedule for work to be performed by maintenance crew. Quantifies dally records of work performed and materials used, records such as Highway Maintenance Management System and the maintenance requests and complaints forms. Assists with instructing crew members dally in safety practices such as flagging operations, wearing of safety equipment, vehicle safety, or job site hazards. Coordinates placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone according to South Carolina Department of Transportation Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide. Conducts safety inspection on all assigned vehicles and equipment. Monitors the preventative maintenance program of equipment to ensure a routine maintenance schedule is followed and to monitor equipment use and wear to prolong equipment life. Maintains a record of items needed by each crew and supplies them in a timely manner in order for the crews to perform their duties in a safe, efficient, and timely manner. Operates both portable tank-mounted salt brine anti-icing equipment and standard dump truck with snowplow attachment and sand spreader to remove snow and ice from highways and bridges. Assists Crew Foreman with managing assigned crew(s) in emergency or inclement weathers. May include on-call personnel for extended working hours or 12- hour shifts in emergency or inclement weather operations. May include being available for extended hours or 12-hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Two (2) years of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operators license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
