Full Time Maintenance Worker III

The purpose of the job is to provide year-round maintenance of county highways, bridges and
equipment so that the public can travel and transport goods in a safe and efficient manner.
Maintenance in the spring, summer and fall includes repair of roads and bridges as they deteriorate with
age. The improvement of roads includes setting grade for drainage, reshaping inslopes and backslopes
for drainage, patching, seal coating, blacktopping, crack sealing, culvert replacement, clearing trees &
brush, spraying weeds and mowing, while winter maintenance includes clearing snow and ice from
roadways and sanding roadways. The person in this position is required to live within 30 minutes of their
assigned shop.

  • Maintenance of County Highways.
  • Maintenance of County and Township bridges.
  • Haul gravel for road maintenance.
  • Drive truck for snowplow and sanding operation.
  • Drive water truck or other equipment during seasonal work.
  • Slope preparation and seeding.
  • Maintenance and repair of county equipment.
  • Cleaning and repair of county shops.
  • Mow and spray for weed control.
  • Install snow fence.
  • Cut and remove brush.
  • Install and maintain drainage structures and tile lines.
  • Order supplies as needed.
  • Maintain civil relations with the public.
  • Other duties as assigned or apparent.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • One and one-half years of experience working for a highway construction firm or highway maintenance department, with experience operating light and heavy construction equipment.
  • Must have knowledge of the construction materials used and the safe handling of these materials, as well as mechanical training.
  • Class "A" drivers license (CDL) preferred.
  • A state license for roadside spraying of herbicides is needed with a one day course given each year.
  • Live within 30 minutes of assigned garage.
  • Pass drug and alcohol test and adhere to County/Federal drug and alcohol requirements for safety sensitive positions.
  • Knowledge of proper and safe operation, servicing and maintenance of tools and equipment.

  • Knowledge of local and state laws and regulations regarding the operation of equipment,
    particularly those pertaining to their operation on public streets.

  • Working knowledge of weed and brush control practices and the application of chemicals.

  • Knowledge of road maintenance procedures.

  • Familiarity with OSHA and relevant Department of Labor laws and requirements.

  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule
    form.

  • Ability to respond to calls for service outside of normal work schedule.

  • Ability to perform a variety of typical assignments under moderate supervision within
    standard operating procedures.

  • Ability to perform fairly standard procedures and tasks where basic analytical ability is
    required. Detailed guidelines and procedures are generally used to make decisions or
    determine actions.

  • Ability to communicate with supervisor and co-workers with basic responses and courtesy.

Position is a Grade 5 with an entry hourly wage range of $25.04 to $28.07, DOQ.
