Under the general direction of the Building Supervisor, performs skilled maintenance, repair, and installation tasks on plumbing, electrical, heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC) systems, mechanical equipment, building structures and grounds and fire/security systems. The Maintenance Mechanic II position is distinguished from Level I in that it requires more knowledge and experience with equipment and system operations, diagnostic methods and procedures, and facility/grounds maintenance and repair.

  1. Performs skilled maintenance, repairs and installations, including but not limited to, electrical wiring, devices, fixtures, equipment, plumbing, pipes, refrigeration, door locking systems, fire/security system equipment, video cameras, sprinkler systems, heating and air conditioning/HVAC.
  2. Analyzes and troubleshoots equipment failures and malfunctions and takes necessary steps for resolution of issues.
  3. Makes repairs or upgrades on buildings and facilities that includes, but not limited to, carpentry, masonry, painting, and general cleaning as needed.
  4. Maintains grounds and landscaping by mowing, watering, trimming, weed and fertilization management, removing fallen trees and branches, maintaining sprinkler systems, and other similar work.
  5. Performs snow and ice removal functions for parking lots, sidewalks, walkways, driveways, and grounds, which may include plowing, shoveling, de-icing, use of a snow-blower, etc.
  6. Remodels and repairs offices and other spaces, including designing, planning, demolition, and installation of office features as needed. Assists with moving furniture and equipment, power/data hook-ups, and other similar duties.
  7. Operates County vehicles, such as pickups, plow trucks, specialized vehicles and light equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  8. Performs preventative maintenance procedures on air handling systems, snow blowers, lawn mowers, and other equipment to assure smooth operations.
  9. Helps to ensure that the buildings and grounds provide a safe and reliable environment for County employees, the public, and for the continuity of county services as it relates to the above duties.
  10. Performs other duties as assigned.
  • The job requires knowledge normally acquired through the completion of a general high school education. Specialized or advanced training in any of the following areas is preferred: mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, welding, carpentry, construction, and/or equipment operations and maintenance.
  • Two to four years of experience working in a building trade(s) is required, such as mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, welding, carpentry, construction and/or equipment operations and maintenance. Any combination of education and work experience related to the above qualifications will be considered.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to work courteously and effectively with County personnel and the general public.
  • Mental ability to frequently handle simultaneous projects requiring concentration and attention to detail. Periodic pressures and/or distractions due to people and/or telephone calls, meeting deadlines fulfilling scheduling requirements, and dealing with concerned citizens, employees, etc.
  • Possession of a valid Michigan drivers license and an acceptable driving record.

  • Work includes occasional outside working conditions with exposure to extreme hot or cold weather conditions.
  • Work includes periodic exposure to noise, fumes, odors, dust and/or dirt.
  • Work may include occasionally exposure to hazards in the workplace, such as risk of electrical shock, fire, chemicals and/or toxins.
  • Physical ability to occasionally lift and/or transport items weighing up to one-hundred (100) pounds.
  • Occasional travel between County locations is required.
  • Extended work day(s) (beyond eight hours/day) are occasionally required and participation in an on-call weekend rotation is required.
  • On-call availability to handle work problems, attend meetings, handle emergencies/crisis situations, etc. at all hours is periodically required.
