An employee in this class provides custodial maintenance of County buildings to ensure a clean and safe environment for staff and visitors. Work is performed under duel general supervision of the DSS Administrative Officer along with the Environmental Assistant Supervisor. Work is evaluated by visual inspection, feedback from staff and visitors and attainment of performance objectives.

  • Provides general custodial maintenance of assigned County buildings and rotate to other assigned County buildings and facilities ( as needed).
  • Performs various custodial duties, which include but are not limited to cleaning and sanitizing restrooms, stocking restrooms with supplies, cleaning windows and other glass surfaces, dusting furniture and other surfaces, removing trash, sweeping and mopping floors, scrubbing / polishing floors, vacuuming / spot cleaning / shampooing carpets, vacuuming upholstery, etc.
  • Cleans porches, walkways, etc.
  • Performs all work in compliance with division policies, procedures and standards of cleanliness, quality and safety.
  • Maintains assigned vehicles and equipment; initiates repair work as needed.
  • Requests necessary tools, materials and supplies.
  • Receives and responds to inquiries, requests for assistance and complaints from County employees and the public.
  • Prepares and submits daily work records.
  • Operates a vehicle, telephone, two-way radio, and various pieces of janitorial equipment, including wet/dry vacuum, vacuum cleaner, carpet shampooer, floor buffer, etc.; uses custodial supplies and tools, various other hand tools, etc.
  • Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor, other County employees, co-workers, and the general public.
  • Perform other duties in that may include assisting with pickup and delivery of offices supplies.
  • Performs related duties as required.
  • Knowledge of the methods, procedures and policies of the County and department
    as they pertain to the performance of duties of the Environmental Assistant.
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment associated with custodial maintenance work.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the industry.
  • Knowledge of the terminology used within the department.
  • Ability to maintain effective relationships with personnel of other departments, professionals and members of the public through contact and cooperation.
  • Ability to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations.
  • Ability to use equipment and tools efficiently and safely.
  • Ability to comprehend, interpret and apply regulations, procedures and related information.
  • Ability to offer assistance to co-workers as required.
  • Ability to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency.
  • Ability to perform required mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to read and interpret various materials pertaining to the responsibilities of the job.
  • Ability to prepare simple records with accuracy and in a timely manner.
Ability to perform work effectively despite occasional exposure to adverse environmental conditions, including temperature extremes, wetness/humidity, machinery hazards, skin irritants, toxic agents, disease, dirt, dust, odors, electrical currents, etc Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by one to two years of experience in facilities maintenance and/or custodial operations, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
