Performs manual custodial and basic maintenance work for County buildings, shops and properties. Uses a variety of janitorial maintenance equipment. Duties are routine in nature and are performed according to readily available guidelines. Maintains the security of the premises and assures that confidential information, such as client records, are not disclosed to unauthorized parties. Performs under the supervision of the Lead Custodian, reports to the Facilities Director. Work is reviewed by inspection.

  1. Vacuums, sweeps, mops, strips, waxes and polishes floors, shampoos carpets. Dusts furniture. Cleans mirrors, venetian blinds, light fixtures, windows, and walls. Collects and empties waste baskets, separates items for recycling. Replaces light bulbs.
  2. Cleans restrooms and replenishes towels, tissue, and soap.
  3. Cleans County jail cells.
  4. Maintains an adequate inventory of supplies.
  5. Checks building security at end of shift.
  6. Performs minor electrical, plumbing, construction maintenance, and painting as needed.
  7. Sweeps debris and clears snow from sidewalks, rakes leaves, mows and trims lawns and shrubbery, waters lawns and shrubbery.
  8. Maintains cleaning equipment and tools, reports to supervisor any need for repairs beyond the scope of this classification.
  9. Acting within the scope of their responsibilities, work as a public employee and municipal officer with courtesy and professionalism, adhering to the highest standard of ethics in accordance with RCW 42.52.
  10. Perform other related duties as assigned.

High School Diploma or G.E.D. and six months general custodial experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the job. Requires valid State of Washington drivers license and good driving record. Employee must be able obtain a valid CPR and First Aid Card and is subject to criminal background check and random drug testing.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Custodial work is physically demanding. The employee must spend the entire time at work standing or walking and requires a great deal of stretching and bending, often in awkward positions. Must be able to perform moderately heavy lifting, up to 75 lbs, or carry objects with both hands and arms. The employee must be able to receive and understand oral and written communications and have knowledge of workplace OSHA Safety Data Sheets and the ability to read, understand and follow labels and instructions. This position frequently requires continuous hand and finger movement. This position frequently requires visual acuity at 20 inches or less, and hearing acuity for speech discrimination.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is generally performed preformed indoors and occasionally outdoors in inclement weather at sites throughout the County. Employees are required to work other hours and weekends as necessary. On a daily basis, custodial staff works with dangerous and toxic products that can be harmful to ones health if not properly handled. Custodians regularly have to cleanup blood, saliva and other bodily fluids that can be unpleasant to deal with.
