Public Works Facility Maintenance Technicians and/or Groundskeeper (Seasonal, Part-Time)

The City of Onalaska is seeking to hire seasonal/part-time Public Works Facility/Maintenance Technicians and Lead Groundskeepers to perform skilled, semi-skilled, and common labor work related to the repair, construction and maintenance of the City Cemetery or other City infrastructure including forestry, street signs, right of ways, and other City owned properties.

Essential Job Functions:

Facility Maintenance Technician

  • Performs maintenance and repairs of all aspects of City Public Works infrastructure, operations and facilities.
  • Performs field installation, routine maintenance and repair of City infrastructure.
  • Performs maintenance activities in relation to the City Water and Sanitary Sewer system.
  • Performs work duties with various crew members in a team environment or work independently as assigned.
  • Operates a wide variety of equipment, including, but not limited to riding lawn mower, skidsteer, one-ton truck, end loader, vibratory soil compactor, and patrol truck with trailer.
  • Provides input and is involved in the preparation of reports, lists, and other documents that contribute to the operation and maintenance of the Citys infrastructure.
  • Perform ground maintenance mowing pruning, raking, snow removal, so that areas remain attractive and safe.

Lead Groundskeeper
  • Performs ground maintenance to include mowing pruning, and raking, so areas remain attractive and safe.
  • Assists in the coordination of the usage of Cemetery/PW facilities in a timely manner to ensure scheduled events are not jeopardized by the lack of maintenance.
  • Provides mechanical skills to repair and maintain facility equipment to include basic repairs.
  • Provides basic carpentry skills to repair doors, locks, siding, roofing, structure fabrication and modification.
  • Assists with heavy moving as needed. Utilizes safe practices when lifting and moving.
  • Provides direction to seasonal/part-time staff to ensure that grounds are ready for planned events.
  • Performs work duties with various crew members in a team environment or work independently as assigned.
  • Provides input and is involved in the preparation of events that contribute to the operation and maintenance of the Citys infrastructure.
  • Performs cemetery duties including general upkeep, assisting citizens locating proper burial and monument locations.

Compensation: Wage range for these seasonal/part-time positions $14.00 to $17.00 per hour, depending on position and qualifications. Seasonal/part-time positions do not qualify for benefits.

Additional information: Duration of positions primarily June through September between (20) to (40) hours weekly with flexible hours available between 7:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Selected candidate subject to background check. EOE/Drug Free Workplace.

High School diploma or equivalent. Prior training and/ or experience which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities as listed above. Must possess and maintain a valid drivers license with good driving record. In addition, Facility Maintenance Technician requires five years experience with equipment operation, infrastructure installation or Public Works background. Lead groundskeeper must have ability to lead and provide guidance to other seasonal staff.
