Were currently hiring a Utility Systems Maintenance Mechanic to perform skilled mechanical and technical work supporting Carys wastewater system. In this role, you'll inspect, maintain, and repair pumps and equipment at remote wastewater pump stations, with responsibilities that also include electrical and electronic systems. This position includes rotating weekend duty and offers the opportunity to work alongside a talented and supportive team that takes pride in serving the Cary community.

Work i s performed under the regular supervision of a Utility Systems Maintenance Supervisor.

This i s a generic class specification that pertains to USM maintenance mechanic/technician I and I I. The duties of each level may be similar but differ i n the level of difficulty or the experience needed to perform certain duties. The duties of the higher classifications may be considerably more technical and complex. The USM division has put i nto place a career ladder that describes the criteria required to meet each of the levels within the career ladder.

  • Utility System Management positions are designated as "critical positions", meaning employees are required to report to work during adverse weather or other emergency situations, to ensure continued operation of remote wastewater facilities.
  • This job posting will be based at our 400 James Jackson Avenue , Cary Operations Center.


**Anticipated hiring range: $53,102 $65,228. Highly qualified candidates with extensive relevant experience may be considered for a salary above this range.**

I nspects pumping stations and related equipment and facilities for proper operations;

Performs regular preventive maintenance such as checking and lubricating bearings and gear boxes, pumps, valves and related equipment; checks amp readings;

Performs complete overhaul of wastewater pumping machinery and equipment;

Applies chemicals to treat sewers for odor control; operates and maintains odor control equipment;

Troubleshoots electrical/ mechanic al problems; calls other personnel i f needed;

Performs electrical/electronic repair and i nstallation work;

Cleans, services and overhauls pumps, motors and related equipment;

Maintains and i nstalls liquid chemical feed pumps; adjusts chemical feed rates;

Maintains and repairs emergency generators;

Demos and decommissions pump station equipment;

Welds for repair and fabrication;

Checks and maintains alarm dialers and SCADA system;

Maintains records and completes assigned work orders;

Runs errands, picks up and delivers materials, supplies;

Operates heavy equipment such as backhoe and cranes as needed;

Performs other job-related tasks as required.
Considerable knowledge of the installation, repair and maintenance of the mechanical, hydraulic and electrical components of water and wastewater pump station equipment; some knowledge of electricity and electronics; considerable knowledge of plumbing and pipe fitting; general knowledge of pump operation theory; general knowledge of pressure regulating valves and pumping stations; general knowledge of chemical feed and adjustment; general knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions of the work; skill in the use and care of tools of the trade; ability to program and troubleshoot equipment and make appropriate decisions; ability to determine improper operation of water and wastewater pumping equipment and to take proper remedial action; ability to keep accurate records; ability to work with moderate independence; ability to follow oral and written directions; ability to work under adverse weather conditions.

Physical Requirements Work in this class is medium to heavy work and may require exposure to various environmental conditions such as heat, cold, rain, and unpleasant surroundings. An employee must have the physical agility to move about freely including climbing stairs and ladders and crawling into tight spaces. Moderate to heavy lifting is required in performing the work. Visual acuity is necessary to perform paperwork, read gauges, and make repairs. An employee must also be able to hear, talk, and smell.

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and some industrial mechanic al maintenance experience.

Experience in the repair and maintenance of water or wastewater pumping equipment is preferred.

Grade I or higher Wastewater Collection Certification is required, or the ability to earn within one year of hire.

Requires possession of a valid drivers license with acceptable driving record.
