I. Purpose of Job

Performs general maintenance on all buildings and other facilities in the Parks and Recreation Department. Must be able to work holidays, weekends and nights during meetings, special events and tournaments.

II. Essential Job Duties

A. Facilities and Maintenance

  • Responds to routine or emergency work orders as needed.
  • Maintains and inspects all facilities on Park properties.
  • Performs plumbing on sinks, toilets, water fountains, and water lines.
  • Performs electrical work installing, repairing, and or troubleshooting electrical problems in facilities, with streetlights and sports field lighting.
  • Performs carpentry on facilities and repairs building structures as needed. (Examples include roofing, siding, drywall, trim, tiling, install fencing, painting)
  • Maintains, inspects, and installs backflow preventers.
  • Builds forms for concrete repair, pours and finishes concrete.
  • Installs and/or repairs new plumbing fixtures, backflow systems, window frames, door locks, heating systems, HVAC units, window air conditioning units and bleachers.
  • Builds and/or repairs partitions, roofs, ceiling, doors, furniture, shelves, fencing and drywall.
  • Assists the IT Department with providing on-site coordination of fiber optic cabling installation, modification, and splicing within the telecommunications system. This includes the physical installation of cabling and surveying job sites to determine the best installation practices.
  • Assists the IT Department with the installation of security camera systems.

B. Trails

  • Oversees the maintenance the entire trail system within the parks system.
  • Responsibilities include maintaining along trail edges and surfacing of all trails.
  • Performs routine maintenance to all trails including the mountain bike trail system along with installation and/or repairs of any amenities within the parks system.
  • Shall perform monthly inspections of each trail section throughout the entire parks system.
  • Performs special projects which include but not limited to signage, benches, trailheads, trash cans, water fountains and other structures.
  • Coordinates upon request with general public and special interest groups with trail planning and construction.

C. Training

  • Internal- Forklift & Skid Steer
  • Professional training as it relates to the position.

III. Other Job Duties

Performs other job duties as assigned, including:

  • Maintenance Workers may be tasked with inspecting and maintaining all playgrounds on Park grounds for safety.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities to assist other divisions in the department as required.

IV. Primary Job Challenges

Primary challenges of this position include having to troubleshoot and accurately assess problems associated with plumbing, electrical, and structural issues and taking appropriate actions to solve problems.

V. Equipment Operated

  • May operate backhoe, track hoe, front-end loader, tractor, skid steer, posthole digger, plumbing tools, electrical tools, and carpentry tools.
  • Computer and computer software including virtual meeting platforms such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams and other office equipment.

VI. Key Competencies Required

  • Job Content Knowledge: Is knowledgeable of basic construction, electrical, carpentry and plumbing practices as necessary in the completion of daily responsibilities. Must know how to operate, maintain and repair a variety of tools used for, making repairs and doing construction. Must be knowledgeable of safety procedures.
  • Language Skills: Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Write routine reports and correspondence. Speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Mathematical Skills: Calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Reasoning Ability: Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. In decision-making, some choices are known while others may need to be identified. Some reliance on precedent. VII. Physical Demands and Work Environment

Physical Demands: Performance of the essential duties of this job requires the incumbent to:

  • Remain active and moving above 50% of the time.
  • Regularly move about around different worksites.
  • Regularly operates equipment or machinery such as backhoe, track hoe, front-end loader, tractor, posthole digger, plumbing tools, electrical tools, and carpentry tools.
  • Frequently positions self to maintain work area and items needed to complete daily tasks.
  • Regularly communicates information verbally and written via cellphone and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
  • Occasionally ascends/descends equipment/ladders.
  • Frequently moves/transports up to 25 pounds.
  • Occasionally moves/transports up to 100 pounds.

Work Environment: Performance of the essential duties of this job requires:

  • Occasional work near moving mechanical parts
  • Occasional work in high, precarious places
  • Occasional exposure to fumes or airborne particles
  • Regular exposure to outdoor weather conditions
  • Occasional exposure to risk of electrical shock
  • Occasional exposure to loud noises, vibrations while using heavy equipment

The work environment is loud (examples: metal can manufacturing department, large earth-moving equipment).

Minimum Requirements

VIII. Qualifications

Education and Experience: The required knowledge, skill, and abilities to satisfactorily perform job duties are normally acquired through obtaining a one-year certificate from a college or technical school; or six to twelve months of carpentry or construction related experience and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
