Job Summary
RISD Museum seeks a Museum Custodian to perform a variety of duties pertaining to the cleanliness and upkeep of the museum's physical space. Perform related duties as required by the supervisor including preparing areas for classes and special events.
The RISD Museum acquires, preserves, exhibits, and interprets works of art and design representing diverse cultures from ancient times to the present. Distinguished by its relationship to Rhode Island School of Design, the Museum educates and inspires artists, designers, students, scholars, and the public through exhibitions, programs, and publications.

Essential Functions:

Keep gallery/exhibition spaces, administrative offices, classrooms, lavatories, and hallways clean and orderly.

Sweep, mop, and polish floors, operate machinery to strip and wax floors, and vacuum cleaner to maintain rugs.

Dust furniture, sills, etc. assure that all dispensers (soap and paper) are filled; remove trash and litter; replace light bulbs as needed; and move furniture and light equipment as required.
Additional Functions:

Sweep and shovel steps and walks, and distribute sand and salt on steps and walkways in case of snow, as needed.

Responsible for checking monthly, emergency lighting and fire extinguishers in assigned building(s).

Perform related duties as required by the supervisor including preparing areas for classes and special events.
Required Knowledge/Skills/Experience:

Ability to develop positive and respectful working relationships with students, staff and faculty throughout a diverse community

Ability to operate machines used in cleaning and special training in the use of cleaning products.

Strong communication skills and ability to interact effectively with a public audience.

Ability to work effectively independently as well as in a team environment.

Ability to demonstrate and model good safety practices.

Basic computer skills and/or the willingness to attend training and adapt to using required technology (i.e. Checking work email, using College supported enterprise systems such as Workday, etc.)
Preferred Qualifications:

High School Diploma or equivalency

One year of related work experience
