JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE: HEAD CUSTODIAN - (Elementary School)

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Possess thorough knowledge of materials, methods and practices used in custodial operations.

  2. Effectively operates and maintains custodial equipment.

  3. Trains and supervises the work of others.

  4. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with all staff and the public.

  5. Uses/operates computer equipment related to the position/job.

  6. Communicates effectively.

  7. Demonstrates proficient use of English language in written and oral forms.

  8. Able to lift and move moderate loads (40-60 lbs.) on a regular basis and heavier loads (60-100 lbs.) on a less frequent basis.

REPORTS TO: Principal

SUPERVISES: Custodial Staff

POSITION SUMMARY: The head custodian is responsible for keeping a District building and immediate building grounds clean, safe and presentable. The head custodian supervises a crew of custodians.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Supervises a crew of custodians who work to well-established standard procedures in an assigned building.

  2. Trains staff, prepares work schedules and reviews work.

  3. Prepares budget reports and fire evaluation routes for students.

  4. Dusts furniture, cleans, washes floors, walls and carpeting.

  5. Cleans washrooms, including replenishment of towels, soaps and tissue.

  6. Keeps track of janitorial supplies and reorders as necessary.

  7. Mows lawns and removes snow.

  8. Works with office staff in coordinating activities and usage of the building.

  9. Ensures proper use of appropriate safety equipment and procedures by work crew.

  10. Inspects playground equipment daily and reports needed repairs.

  11. Responds to alarms and emergencies on a 24 hour basis.

  12. Performs other tasks and responsibilities assigned by the supervisor.

PHYSICAL CONTEXT OF THE JOB: The individual in this position uses brooms, dust cloths, mops, power waxers, floor scrubbers, vacuum cleaners, waxes, cleaning agents and computer equipment. Lifting is often required, sometimes heavy.
