The Prince William County Office of Youth Services is seeking a reliable and flexible Relief Cook to join our food service team. This role is entry-level and ideal for someone who enjoys variety, thrives in fast-paced environments, and is passionate about preparing nutritious and delicious meals. As a Relief Cook, you will step in to support our kitchen during staff absences, busy periods, or special events.

Join our team in achieving our mission to change the lives of at-risk youths our two residential programs:

  • The Juvenile Detention Center, a secure facility for youth, ages 12 to 20, who have been charged with crimes and are awaiting their disposition.
  • And the Molinari Juvenile Shelter, a 15 bed non-secure facility, residential alternative to secure detention that houses youth ages 10 to 17 who have been charged with non-delinquent offenses and who need a short-term residential placement.

ABOUT THIS ROLE

Relief Cooks are temporary staff members that are responsible for preparing and cooking food for large groups of people according to specified menus and/or for individuals requiring special diets. The key responsibilities include:

  • Preparing and cooking meals according to set menus and dietary requirements.
  • Distributing appropriate portions of food onto serving plates or into individual containers and load food on carts for delivery.
  • Maintain high standards of food hygiene and kitchen cleanliness by keeping clean and sanitized equipment, utensils, and clean kitchen and dining areas,
  • Ensuring proper storage and labeling of food items.
  • Assisting with inventory checks (food, cleaning supplies and equipment) and restocking as needed.
  • Monitoring the use and cost of kitchen resources.
  • Collaborating with fulltime staff to procuring food and equipment for the kitchen.
  • Following all health and safety regulations.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

High school diploma or G.E.D.

PREFERENCES:

  • Experience working with commercial kitchen tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of cleaning and sanitizing practices.
  • Extensive Knowledge of Health department regulations related to food handling practices.
  • Ability to conduct kitchen Inventory.
  • Serve Safe Certificate

SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS:

Shifts vary depending on the facility. Some shifts may be 8 hours, others may be 10 or 12 hours. Shift assignments may include day, evening, weekend or holiday work.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: The selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment background check before an official offer can be made.

ENTRY SALARY RANGE: $21.14 - $32.17 Hourly

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Positions in this class typically require: crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, and extreme temperatures.

Must pass a pre-employment physical.
