CUSTODIAL POSITION VACANCY
POSITION: DAY CUSTODIAN
SCALE: CU-1
JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE: The Day Custodian will perform custodial work required for the routine cleaning, maintenance, and operation of the area to which they are assigned by the Building Administrator, the Custodial Supervisor, the Assistant Custodial Supervisor or the Head Custodian of the building. The following procedures may vary from location to location and are set forth as a guide so that all locations work from a set of standard operations. Hours of work may need to be adjusted on building needs and/or activities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Must demonstrate proper mixing techniques for cleaning chemicals.
- Must demonstrate proper operating procedures for the use of custodial equipment including buffer/speed buffer, gym finish applicator, weed eater, power mowers, air blower, and snow blower.
- Must demonstrate proper techniques for stripping floors and shampooing carpets.
- Perform indoor, routine and detailed cleaning and sanitation tasks using electric and manual cleaning equipment, chemicals and solvents.
- Perform landscaping tasks using motorized, manual and/or electric cutting/trimming equipment in hot and cold weather conditions.
- Read, comprehend and interpret instructions outlining the proper use of cleaning solvents, chemicals, and equipment to assure their safe application.
- Verbal acumen essential to communicate with others.
- Comprehend and comply with verbal and written instructions.
- Climb ladders to heights up to 12 feet in the performance of specific cleaning and/or light maintenance tasks.
- Walk up and down stairs with heavy loads up to 50 pounds.
- Lift objects with weights up to 100 pounds.
- Physically capable of the repetitive arm, back and leg motions persistently over an hour or greater using outdoor and indoor cleaning/grounds equipment.
- Work with cleaning chemicals to remove mold as well as bloodborne pathogens while using personal protective equipment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must possess a high school diploma or its equivalent.
- Must demonstrate proper mixing techniques for cleaning chemicals.
- Must demonstrate proper operating procedures for the use of custodial equipment including buffer/speed buffer, gym finish applicator, weed eater, power mowers, air blower, and snow blower.
- Must demonstrate proper techniques for stripping floors and shampooing carpets.
- Must be available for and able to perform snow removal as required.
- Day Custodian should be honest, dependable, show initiative and be able to work well with fellow employees and the public. Should be physically able to perform assigned duties.
Procedure Guidelines –
- Vacuum carpet daily using a 20 lb. vacuum for 3 hours.
- Collect and lift waste paper and debris of 2 lbs, and put in container daily (lifting above one’s head).
- Must be able to wear rubber gloves while cleaning restrooms.
- Must be able to go up and down stairs frequently during the workday.
- Must be able to lift 75 lbs. tables while cleaning the cafeteria.
- Must be able to climb 8 to 12 ft. ladder to install burned out lights.
- Must have visual ability to inspect work for cleanliness.
- Must move a 90 lb. floor machine over floor surfaces and up and down stairs.
- Must move a heavy water 9 lb. mop over floor surfaces
- Must be able to reach 2 ft. above head to dust and do windows.
- Must move furniture from 15 lbs. to 50 lbs. to clean.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Cleaning Tasks:
- Dust mop all building corridors three times each day.
- Wet mop corridors as needed due to inclement weather.
- Clean restrooms and lavatories as needed during the day.
- Replenish restroom supplies, i.e. towels, tissues, and soap, as required.
- Wash interior glass in the building; partitions and framed pictures.
- Clean boiler room, keep clear of surplus items or combustible materials.
- Assist in cleaning of mechanical equipment during summer months, i.e. heaters and blowers.
- Ground Maintenance:
- Tour exterior of building to check for vandalism or problems.
- Sweep walkways, entrances, and steps each morning. Remove debris, paper, and trash from premises.
- Cut grass in assigned areas; trim.
- Remove snow in assigned areas. Clean ice/snow from steps and entrance.
- Building Needs/Repairs
- Report repairs and other building needs to building office or Plant Department.
- Fire Danger; Thefts:
- Report any fire dangers, thefts or illegal entries to Head Custodian and school office.
- Report any items that affect the safety of staff and students.
- Other Responsibilities:
- Regularly inspect equipment and perform minor repairs.
- Visually inspect the building for vandalism and repair objects.
- Inventory and order custodial supplies and equipment.
- Elementary Custodians should understand the heating and cooling system well enough to detect faulty operation that must be reported to the Maintenance Department. At the secondary schools, the Head Custodian is responsible for this item.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (also see Physical Demands Checklist, attached)
While performing duties all Plant Department custodial positions are physically demanding and require the ability to lift up to 100 lb., work off of ladders/scaffold, work in confined areas with frequent stretching, twisting, and bending. Specific job categories may be more strenuous and may require different physical abilities, but all jobs incorporate the above requirements.
WORK ENVIRONMENT / CONDITIONS:
The work setting involves performance in a school environment both indoors and outdoors. You will work with various levels of staff and students.
