This is an entry-level position performing unskilled labor, reporting to a Sanitation Supervisor. Employee is responsible for the collection and disposal of residential and commercial refuse on a scheduled route throughout the county, and performing other similar duties as required.
Work schedules may be morning, afternoon or evening shifts and could also consist of weekends and holidays.

Waste Services is responsible for weekly curbside waste and every other week curbside recycling collection for over 151,000 customers in the urban services district as well as collection of over 200 public litter baskets in the downtown Nashville corridor. The division also operates four convenience centers where residents of Davidson County can bring waste, recycling, bulk items, food waste, household hazardous waste, and other items for recycling or disposal and eight recycling drop-off locations available to residents who do not qualify for curbside recycling collection.
Waste Services currently employs staff members working in collection, administration, customer service, education, landfill engineering, development review, and outreach.
- Safely and efficiently collecting and disposing of refuse as a member of a two-man crew on a scheduled route or in response to service requests.
- Picking up, emptying and returning trash receptacles.
- Assisting in the delivery and unloading of collected materials at designated facilities.
- Guiding the vehicle driver in backing up/maneuvering vehicle and assisting in other situations involving limited sight and maneuverability.
- May drive a truck as needed.
- Performing a variety of other manual labor functions as needed.
The work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous or unusual environmental situations that require a range of safety and other precautions.
The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing on equipment, walking, and lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds.
All positions will involve some weekend work, either on a regular basis and/or occasionally due to holidays and weather.
Eighth (8th) Grade Education
LICENSE REQUIRED:
Valid Drivers License may be required for some positions.
Candidates with accreditations earned in a foreign institute are encouraged to apply.
Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.
Some positions in this classification will require successful candidates to obtain a Class "B" or higher Commercial Driver's License (CDL) prior to the end of their six (6) month probationary period. Failure to obtain the CDL within the six (6) month probationary period may result in automatic termination/dismissal.
