Job Responsibilities

Responsibilities of the General Maintenance Technician II:

Performs as a Maintenance Technician II. Performs and monitors fellow crew members in a variety of tasks such as safely operating all types of equipment utilized in cemetery operations including but not limited to, operating utility vehicles, riding lawn mowers, tractors, small tractors, spreaders, forklifts, power pressure washers. augers, excavators. Digging and squaring graves using pneumatic equipment; assists in lifting and placing caskets on lowering devises; cleaning headstones using sprayer and hand brush; aligning headstones; loading and unloading materials; Clearing cemetery grounds of debris using power trimmers, chainsaws, axes, shovels, rakes, blowers, vacuums, etc.; weeding, mulching, and applying fertilizer; pruning shrubs and low level dead branches; removing snow and ice; and cleaning service and administrative areas.

Knowledge of how to properly carry out grounds-keeping, mechanical maintenance, housekeeping, and custodial duties. Knowledge of safety practices relevant to the area of employment. Skill in safely operating mechanical equipment (such as mini excavators, dumpers, and industrial trucks) and hand tools related to those used in landscaping, gardening, opening and closing grave sites, custodial cleaning supplies and equipment. Ability to read and understand a measuring tape/ruler. Must have a firm grasp of the

English language with regards to reading, writing, and spell checking. Ability to follow instruction and work with others. Ability to keep accurate written records and communicate clearly with fellow employees and supervisors.

  • Burial operations are conducted within the standards set forth by the NCA Operational Standards and Measures. As a member of a 2-to-3-person team, will ensure the Grave-site Layout Plan is followed, inspects, verifies gravesite location. Works as a team to prepare gravesites for daily interments.

Follows instructions from the primary excavator operator and works as the alternate excavator operator. Verifies and signs Decedent Chain of Custody. As a new worker, will be trained in the proper performance of interments.

  • Headstones, grave markers and niche cover Operations:
  • upon delivery Inspects and stores headstone and niche covers
  • Installs headstone and niche covers
  • Headstones and niche covers are visible and legible
  • Headstones and niche covers do not show evidence of debris or objectionable accumulations.
  • Equipment and Tools:
  • Cemetery equipment and vehicles present a clean and neat appearance
  • Equipment preventative maintenance: before, during, and after inspections
  • Tools maintenance
  • Facilities Maintenance
  • Office and Restroom clean and functional
  • Maintenance Pad is clean and orderly
  • Break room and locker room
  • Grounds Maintenance:
  • Understands and follows Grounds Maintenance Plan
  • Visually prominent areas: Turf
  • Trees and Shrubs
  • Planting beds
  • Safety:
  • Safety Hazards
  • Open Graves
  • Personal protective Equipment
  • Safety Training
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

  • Knowledge of landscaping and grounds maintenance, and experience in the safe operation and maintenance of lawn and garden equipment. The ability to follow instructions and effectively communicate orally and in writing with fellow workers and supervisor(s). Able to assign and monitor task completion of fellow Maintenance Technician II personnel assigned to their duty area (ability to dual verify gravesites, headstone installations and temporary markers). Prefer high school diploma or GED, mechanical experience, and/or excavator experience.

Additional Requirements:

  • Position may require employee to work evenings and weekends.
  • Position requires routine driver duties.
  • Position requires frequent stooping and/or bending.
  • Position requires frequent lifting: 60 lbs.
  • Position requires non-essential declaration.
  • Position may be required to report to work during emergency situations.
  • Work environment will involve working in all types of weather associated with the cemetery location.
