Public Works Maintenance Worker

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
This is the entry-level position in the Public Works Department, Maintenance Division, that works under the direction of the Public Works Maintenance Manager or designee and is responsible for the maintenance and repair of streets, storm drainage infrastructure, parks, landscaping, medians, recreational fields, and buildings or facilities throughout the City. The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE GUIDELINES
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education and Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
Experience: One (1) year of broad in maintenance or a related field.
Licenses and Certificates: Possession of a valid drivers license or ability to obtain upon hire.The conditions herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Environment: Work is performed primarily in an outdoor setting and shop environment; travel from site to site; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, noxious odors, gases, and all types of weather and temperature conditions; exposure to hazardous traffic conditions; work and/or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces and rough terrain; incumbents may be required to respond to emergency and public calls after hours including evenings and weekends.
Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting and in a shop environment; to walk, stand and sit for prolonged periods of time; to frequently stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach, twist, grasp, and make repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties; to climb unusual heights on ladders; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull moderate to heavy amounts of weight; to operator assigned equipment and vehicles; and to verbally communicate to exchange information. Must possess sufficient strength and stamina to lift and carry objects weighing up to 90 pounds and perform sustained heavy physical labor.
Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction.
Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.

- Removes weeds, trash and other debris from parks, landscape areas, and other public property.
- Trims trees, bushes, shrubs and mows turf areas.
- Digs, shovels, hauls, loads and unloads soils, sand, leaves, trimmings, and other materials.
- Removes and replaces pavement surfaces; repairs potholes.
- Cleans restrooms, pump houses, play courts and picnic areas.
- Paints, replaces light bulbs; clears plugged drains and toilets.
- Performs custodial duties.
- Sprays oil and traffic paint in accordance with established standards.
- Cleans storm channels and catch basins.
- Cleans, pump houses, play court and picnic areas.
- Paints and clears plugged drains.
- Operates and maintains a wide variety of hand and power tools and light equipment related to parks and general facilities maintenance.
- Inspects and/or repairs play equipment at frequent intervals to ensure equipment is safe and functioning safely.
- Installs, maintains, and repairs irrigation system.
- Ensures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use.
- Safely operates vehicles of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling and unloading of various equipment, soil and sand, performing tree work, and other job functions.
- Provides leadership and direction to lower classified workers (FT, PT, and seasonal), volunteers, and community service workers.
- Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance.
- Prunes trees and shrubs in conformance with established professional practices.
- Conducts traffic control when working in traffic areas of the City; installs street barricades and cones prior to the performance of maintenance or repair activities; directs and controls traffic around work sites.
- Installs and repairs street signs.
- Breaks and removes concrete using jack hammers, pavement breakers, and other hand and power tools; dig, shovel, haul, load, and unloads materials; cleanup work sites upon completion of jobs.
- Performs minor repairs or replacement of cracked, raised, sunken or otherwise damaged sidewalks, curbs, and gutters; perform minor concrete work including removal of old surface material as well as pouring, forming, and finishing of concrete.
- Removes graffiti
- Other related duties as required.
- Observes safe working methods and practices.
- Responds to emergency off-hour work situations as required.
Knowledge of:
- Best practices, methods, materials, terminology, and equipment, as it relates to the maintenance division.
- Considerable knowledge of grounds maintenance methods and techniques
- Considerable knowledge of trees, plants, flowers, weed and shrubs, including the diseases and insects with which they may become infected and their eradication.
- Considerable knowledge of streets and street repair.
- Operation and maintenance of tools and equipment used in ground maintenance.
- Principles and practices of employee supervision including work planning.
- Assignment review and evaluation, and the training of staff in work procedures.
- Budgeting preparation, procedures and techniques.
- Respond to emergency situations in a proper and effective manner.
- Follow all established safety standards.
- Maintain equipment in good operating condition. Read, interpret and understand landscape diagrams, plans and drawings. Provide quality service in a cost-effective manner.
- Perform heavy physical labor.
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Operate a variety of light and heavy equipment, including hand and power tools.
- Work independently and perform heavy manual work on a regular basis.
- Effectively utilize computer applications and technology related to work.
- Prepare and maintain accurate, up-to-date reports and records.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Apply safe work practices.
