Title: Custodian

Classification: Full-time, Non-exempt

Pay: $20.80/hr.

Shift: Hourly (range 32-40 hours/week)

Reports To : Facilities Manager

Mission: The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History inspires a thirst for discovery and a passion for the natural world.

Position Summary: Provide custodial services and assist in the maintenance services for the museums buildings and campus. Provide services in moving equipment, exhibit displays, furniture, receiving shipments, and storing supplies. In addition, this position provides services ensuring a secure and safe environment for our museum guests and staff and provides support to the museums facility use and the museums exhibition programs where assigned.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Provide housekeeping and general janitorial maintenance of all museum buildings.
  • Assist with maintenance of facilities.
  • Take assignments and projects from senior custodial and facilities staff.
  • Provide support to museum events and facilities for use as directed.
  • Responsible for the setup and breakdown of museum events and programs.
  • Maintain clean and safe areas for museum guests and staff.
  • Work with the other custodial staff to maintain and implement the museums housekeeping schedule.
  • Advise supervisor and other ordering custodial staff of supplies needed.
  • Help move and deliver supplies.
  • Assist at times in care and maintenance for the grounds and museum landscaping.
  • Ensure workspace is clean and clear of clutter consistent with Museum and department operations and safety procedures.
  • Contributes to a positive guest experience by greeting and addressing any questions when encountering guests as they navigate through the Museum and Sea Center.
  • Support the Museums commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion for fellow staff, guests, and the community.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Essential Requirements:

  • Able to operate and use a hand truck for moving supplies.
  • Able to use ladders safely.
  • Able to regularly work one weekend day.
  • Able to follow verbal and written instructions; good auditory skills with a full range of hearing and good vision including acuity, depth perception, color vision.
  • Comfortable Basic computer skills, ability to use email and communicate using the Museums Microsoft Outlook, basic Microsoft Word.
  • Comfortable working with the general public and performing custodial tasks with the public and staff present in the area.
  • Able to respond to emergency situations including but not limited to chemical spills, fires, and evacuations.
  • Flexible time management (working around other departments and projects).
  • Able to safely operate electric transport cart.
  • Must hold a valid California Drivers License with a clean driving record, to become an authorized driver of Museum vehicles.

Additional desirable skills:

  • Previous custodial/cleaning experience.
  • Knowledge and experience using a variety of small power tools.
  • Painting, drywall, carpentry & general handy man work.
  • Mechanical repair of small equipment.

Work Environment:

  • Frequent work throughout all Museum facilities including galleries, exhibit halls, presentation halls, research laboratories, storage rooms, roofs, and maintenance and/or metal/wood shop.
  • Frequent work outdoors, walking grounds and in inclement weather.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, sitting, climbing (stairs & ladders), crawling and lifting of moderate to heavy loads (50lbs).
  • Frequent work in elevated places.
  • Occasional work with and possible exposure to chemicals, including cleaning agents, paint, gasoline, and other solvents.
