Position Summary
The Assistant Head Custodian plays a vital role in ensuring a clean, safe, and well-maintained learning environment across the campus. This position assists in overseeing the daily custodial operations and supports the coordination of custodial staff activities to uphold district standards of cleanliness, safety, and operational efficiency. The individual in this role helps implement and monitor routine cleaning schedules, preventative maintenance procedures, and emergency response protocols. They serve as a liaison between custodial teams, campus administration, and district maintenance departments to ensure facilities and grounds are consistently maintained to meet the needs of students, staff, and the community.
Minimum Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency.
- Three (3) years of custodial experience or equivalent.
- Valid Driver License with a good driving record (meet and maintain liability coverage eligibility by BISD Carrier).
- Satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check.

- Ability to communicate effectively in both English and Spanish.

Essential Functions/Key Responsibilities
- Effectively plan and coordinate custodial activities, prepare work schedules, supervise both day/night shift staff according to district procedures.
- Promote efficiency, morale, teamwork, and interaction with fellow staff members.
- Direct and assist in setting up facilities for special events.
- Acquire supplies and custodial equipment and maintain inventory control to ensure adequate service levels and appropriate budget management through established procedures.
- Ensure cleanliness and proper maintenance of the building and grounds.
- Implement and maintain an established cleaning schedule that will include cleaning of floors, whiteboards, waste baskets, windows, furniture, equipment, walls and restrooms.
- Keep school building and grounds, including sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, and play areas neat and clean.
- Comply with local laws and procedures for storage and disposal of trash.
- Supervises and assists custodial personnel, using proper techniques with ground maintenance which includes parking lots, fence lines, playground areas and equipment, lawn shrubs, trees and flower beds.
- Supervises and trains custodial personnel to use safe and proper work/cleaning techniques including the use of all inside/outside power equipment needed to support programs.
- Make the campus/building available for maintenance repairs and activities, minimizing interference with curricular or extracurricular activities during normal or other than normal duty hours.
- Maintains and supervises proper use of personal protective equipment (in case of an accident, the Assistant Head Custodian is responsible for timely reporting of the incident to the Head Custodian, Principal, proper authorities, HR Dept., etc.
- Ensures compliance with the Texas Hazardous Communications Act which includes training of the staff and emphasizing safety, storing, handling, labeling and application of all chemicals.
- Make minor building repairs and promptly report major repairs needed to the Head Custodian.
- Ensure that all doors and windows are appropriately locked and secure.
- Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting and climbing. Operate equipment and use tools according to established safety procedures.
- Correct unsafe conditions and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to the supervisor.
- Maintain tools and equipment and perform preventive maintenance as required.
- Maintain a professional relationship with students, faculty, administration and community patrons.
- Submit all data and information as requested.
- Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and board policy.
- Complete requested paperwork and regularly monitor district email for pertinent communication.
- Participate in meetings, training sessions, and seminars as scheduled.
- Work overtime and on weekends as necessary to meet District events and facility schedules.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Performs additional duties and accepts other responsibilities as may be assigned.
Working Conditions
Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment, including computer and peripherals and other equipment applicable to position.
Physical/Motion/Posture: Physical ability to walk, stoop, stand, twist, and squat on a constant basis. Frequent standing, walking, bending/stooping, squatting, climbing stairs/ladders, pushing/pulling, and twisting. Strenuous walking and climbing stairs; occasional keyboarding and use of a mouse.
Lifting: Frequent heaving lifting, carrying, pushing, dragging or pulling objects (44 - 100 pounds).
Environment: Work inside and outside (moderate exposure to the sun, heat, cold, and occasional exposure to biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, mold, fungi, etc. approved chemicals; work around moving objects. May work prolonged or irregular hours.
Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; work with frequent deadlines; maintain emotional control under stress.
