JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Completion of at least a ninth-grade education. Graduation from high school or equivalent is preferred.
Certification or Licensure: None required. Employees who possess the appropriate certificate may be assigned responsibility for checking or operating heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning equipment.
Skills: Employees must know all seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System including commitment to the student, professional, interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills, and knowledge of the job. Knowledge of the methods, materials, and practices of building and grounds work; ability to operate and maintain custodial and grounds care equipment; including scrubbers, and hydraulic lifts, uses personal protective equipment and other safety tools and practices; monitors building spaces and grounds to ensure a safe and secure environment; possesses a basic knowledge of emergency response procedures. Sufficient training to comprehend oral or written instructions.
Work Experience: Should have previous experience in public housekeeping. Experience in leading or supervising work activities is desirable. Should be able to pass a rigid physical examination and perform heavy manual work.
PRIMARY DUTY:
This position is responsible for supervising the Assistant Head Custodian and school Custodians in performing building cleaning and facilities maintenance work in schools and administrative buildings. Involves varied building cleaning duties and related facilities and grounds maintenance work.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Performs all duties assigned by the administrator such as:
a. Sweeping, mopping, scrubbing and waxing floors
b. Cleaning blinds, window glass (inside and outside), light fixtures, walls, carpets, restroom facilities (showers, urinals, commodes, all fixtures, etc.)
c. Maintains grounds related to the building (cuts grass and shrubbery, trims and edges)
d. Assists with training new employees in all phases of housekeeping and grounds care.
e. Assists the principal in scheduling and supervising established work standards of other building custodians.
2. On-the-job training in the application of simple manual skills and use of cleaning and grounds tools equipment, and supplies to clean the interior of buildings and maintain grounds.
3. The employee shall carry out such other and further duties, whether specifically listed above or not, as are assigned or required by such employee’s supervisor, other appropriate school personnel, law board policy administrative regulation, department handbook, as are reasonably necessary to the efficient operation of the school system and its mission.
WORK ENVIRONMENT / PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The work environment characteristics are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to walk, stand, and sit.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to lift moderately heavy objects, climb, and complete inspection of work and related maintenance activities. The nature of work is repetitive requires sustained physical effort and involves some heavy work in moving or lifting furniture and equipment with some exposure to accident and injury hazards and disagreeable elements.
Frequent overtime or night work required, etc. Ability to respond to emergency work requirements at any time and to work overtime and unusual hours. Considered emergency personnel and are required to report to buildings during inclement weather.
