The Oregon State Capitol is a top sightseeing destination, attracting thousands of visitors each year who are interested in its political, historical, and architectural significance. Registered as a National Historic Landmark, the Capitol features polished travertine stone, brass staircase banisters, and floors crafted of Phenix Napoleon Grey Marble with Radio Black marble border.

The Facilities Services Team is recruiting for an experienced custodian with knowledge of commercial building cleaning and historical site maintenance. This position will be responsible for the general cleaning inside and outside the building, as well as performing minor maintenance and repairs. The Capitol requires constant care, and staff with a keen eye to detail. The successful candidate will have a good understanding of many cleaning techniques, and cleaning tools, as well as the proper handling and use of cleaning chemicals.

This is a full-time, continuing swing shift position with the following varying schedule:

Odd-numbered years:

  • January June: 4:00 pm 12:30 am
  • July December: 12:00 pm 8:30 pm

Even-numbered years:

  • February March: 4:00 pm 12:30 am
  • April January: 12:00 pm 8:30 pm

Legislative Custodians work on-site at the State Capitol located at 900 Court Street NE in Salem, Oregon.

Other duties include:

  • Picking up paper and refuse and sweeping/moping walkways. Washing, scrubbing, and disinfecting restrooms and related areas. Restocking restrooms with appropriate paper products.
  • Vacuuming, shampooing, and extracting carpets and upholstery cleaning.
  • Sweeping, scrubbing, moping, waxing and polishing concrete, tile, linoleum, marble, and wood floors.
  • Cleaning and dusting walls, woodwork, wall partitions, and other equipment.
  • Cleaning windows, door panels and handrails.
  • Cleaning and polishing brass.
  • Maintaining equipment used in the course of work and monitoring inventory.
  • Picking up and sorting recycle material into the appropriate containers.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES NEEDED TO PERFORM ESSENTIALS FUNCTIONS:

  • Must be able to climb ladders and work with heights, stand, stoop, kneel crawl, bend, grasp, squat.
  • Must be able to lift 20 pounds.
  • Follow written and oral instructions sufficient to perform the functions of the position.
  • Perform simple repairs, unclog drains and toilets.
  • Read labels and instructions on proper use of chemicals and cleansers.
  • Clean around clients, members, staff, and office workers.
  • Oversee custodial work performed by others.
  • Work safely with caustic cleaning chemicals and solutions.
  • Make proper measurements and dilutions of chemicals and cleansers.
  • Work in an environment which contains dust and odors.
  • Sanitize and disinfect restrooms, floors, etc.
  • Work harmoniously with other staff, clients, and the public.
  • Work independently.
  • Push and manipulate heavy floor equipment, such as scrubbers, buffers, waxers, shampooers, and vacuums.

This will require Legislative employees to work both from home and within the building as the construction project dictates.
