Job Title Maintenance Technician/Custodian (Ashe Campus) Job Description

This is a full-time 12-month position reporting to the Dean of the Ashe Campus. The custodian/maintenance technician will do all phases of cleaning. Daily responsibilities include stripping, waxing, and buffing floors, cleaning (dusting, vacuuming, sweeping, and mopping) classrooms, offices, and common areas; disinfecting all areas; and other general cleanings. This person will also perform general maintenance and preventive maintenance of facilities and systems. Additional responsibilities include classroom and meeting room set-ups and maintenance of grounds.

Hours: 12:00 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. Monday through Thursday

8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Friday

Hours are subject to change based on college events or activities.

Full Time or Part Time Full Time Essential Duties Summary

Duties Include:

  • Vacuum all carpets and mats daily. Sweep, mop, and buff all tile floors as needed.
  • Operate all custodial equipment.
  • Clean, sanitize, disinfect, and stock all restrooms and water fountains.
  • Deliver supplies to various departments/divisions and run errands as needed.
  • Empty all trash cans daily; Wash cans and change liners as needed.
  • Clean doors, walls, and windows as needed in offices and classrooms.
  • Clean vents, light, and other fixtures in all areas as needed.
  • Sweep/blow outside entrances daily.
  • Clean and disinfect tables, desks, and chalkboards as needed in classrooms
  • Clean and dust blinds as needed
  • Conduct preventive maintenance on HVAC systems, elevators, and other equipment (training provided).
  • General maintenance of the facility, e.g., changing bulbs, minor plumbing repairs, and minor painting.
  • Assist with recycling and collecting the recyclables for the bins.
  • Coordinate, plan, and work with other custodians and administration concerning stripping/waxing floors and cleaning carpets when needed.
  • Carry radio as needed. Cell phone preferable.
  • Snow removal and salting sidewalks and parking areas.
  • Mowing and weed-eating grounds.
  • Mulching and maintaining landscaping areas.
  • Wear appropriate PPE per OSHA, state, and college guidelines.
  • Keep required records and complete training and paperwork as required.
  • Manage inventory and procure supplies as needed.
  • Drive forklift and unload supplies, move equipment, etc.
  • Perform other duties required by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED/AHS equivalent
  • Valid drivers' license,
  • Pleasant professional disposition and ability to interact and work with diverse groups of people.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior commercial cleaning experience
  • Familiarity with OSHA 10 and SDS information
  • Basic computer skills using MS Office and website searches.

Physical Demands

Custodians usually work indoors with well-lit, heated buildings for cleaning inside buildings, but also have to work outdoor for duties such as sweep/clean sidewalks, pressure clean buildings, and trash removal. The work can be physically demanding and sometimes dirty and unpleasant odors. Custodians are susceptible to bruises and burns from the tools and equipment and chemicals they use daily. Most of the time is spent on their feet, pushing and lifting heavy items. They may work around lots of noise, from loud rambunctious students to noisy machines, and bending, stooping, and stretching may be required for certain tasks.

  • Walking for 8 hours per day
  • Lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Climbing/stooping frequently
  • Pushing/pulling for tasks such as mopping, sweeping, waxing, etc.
  • Stretching/reaching overhead
  • Tolerates temperature extremes both indoors and out.
  • Capable of tolerating heights of up to 25 feet
  • Stripping/waxing floors and cleaning carpets
  • Tile/grout cleaning
  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals

Salary Grade Salary Salary Range: $31,200 to $40,000 based on education and experience
