About the Utilities Maintenance Division:The mission of the Utilities Maintenance Division is to provide responsible operation and maintenance of the water and sewer lines, fire hydrants, valves, manholes, and lift stations to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the citizens of Jacksonville.
About the Opportunity:The Utilities Maintenance Division is seeking to hire two temporary Maintenance Workers to conduct 100% inspection and material identification of water supply service lines, on all community water systems. Utilities maintenance workers perform responsible semiskilled manual work in a variety of construction, repair and maintenance assignments involving the use of specialized tools and small equipment; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.

The salary posted is the full salary range for this position. The starting hourly rate is expected to be in the range of$14.76- $19.19 per hour depending on qualifications.
Essential Functions/Typical Tasks
Maintaining and repairing water and sewer lines and appurtenances; operating a variety of equipment and trucks.(These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. - Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew including pavement cutting, ditch digging, manhole and line cleaning, main and pipe repair, laying and backfilling.
- Assists with cuts, fits, lays, repairs, taps, cleans and flushes water mains, pipe, gates and fittings on repair of mains and services and installation of services and fire hydrants; assists in shutting off broken sections of water mains.
- Assists with the determination of the locations of telephone, power, television, water and sewer lines from the appropriate sources prior to excavation.
- Responds to complaints regarding water leaks, pressure loss or no water; evaluates situation; explains findings to supervisor.
- Ensures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use.
- Drives trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling and unloading of various equipment, gravel and sand.
- Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor; cleans equipment.
- Operates a variety of power construction and maintenance equipment used in the performance of tasks.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Required Education and Experience
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.
Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Some knowledge of the maintenance, repair and manual tasks of the area assigned; some knowledge in the use of common and specialized hand and power tools required in the work; some knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of mechanical equipment required in the work; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
