The Divisions within Transportation Maintenance are responsible for sidewalk maintenance, curb and gutter maintenance, asphalt maintenance, storm sewer maintenance, right of way mowing, downtown cleaning, resurfacing and pavement preservation, bridge maintenance and private development/utility inspections. The 218 person staff maintain over 1,130 miles of streets and sidewalks, over 33,000 curb ramps, 3.2 million linear feet of stormwater pipes and over 32,000 drainage inlets.

The Asphalt Maintenance Worker will be responsible for tasks related to street maintenance which include maintaining the cleanliness of equipment and work areas, adhering to safety policies and procedures, and operating a pavement compactor roller as necessary to repair roads.

  • Assist maintenance crews in street maintenance activities, such as patching potholes, paving and conducting full-depth pavement failure repairs
  • Determining, gathering, and preparing the necessary equipment and supplies for maintenance work requests
  • Examine equipment for operability, safety, and any required maintenance, as well as cleaning and loading equipment and supplies
  • Ensure the establishment of safe work zones by setting up warning/safety signs, cones, and/or flags in compliance with regulations
  • Perform various maintenance tasks, including shoveling, luting, and rolling asphalt
  • Operate walk-behind leaf machines and hand tools for efficient leaf collection
  • Inspect and maintain tools and equipment by replacing worn or damaged parts, monitoring safe operational use, and cleaning equipment as needed
  • Supports City of Raleigh cleanup and repair during inclement weather situations
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED and one year of maintenance or customer service experience related to assignment

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

Licensing and Certifications:
  • Valid North Carolina Class C Drivers license with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Drivers license with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire
Knowledge of:

ADA and Other Requirements Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Working Conditions: Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); and frequent exposure to intense noise.
