JOB DESCRIPTION FOR CUSTODIAN

Job Description : To maintain cleanliness and support a sanitary environment in the school district buildings.

Qualifications :

  1. High school diploma or GED/ HiSET (High School Equivalency Test).
  2. Must be able to pass a drug test.
  3. Must adhere to appearance guidelines; i.e., sleeved shirts, clean and well-groomed clothing, no hats, no visible tattoos or piercings.
  4. Safety and OSHA training. Attend training as necessary; i.e., Child Abuse Training, Blood Borne Pathogens, etc.
  5. One (1) year of related experience in the maintenance field (a combination of training and experience may be considered).

Responsible To: Maintenance Director- Principal- Superintendent to coincide with chain of command.

Performance Responsibilities/Essential Functions [1] :

  1. Be in the assigned building at all times except when custodial responsibilities require assistance in other areas. Notify the office when it is necessary to be out of the building.
  2. Mop, vacuum and spot mop floors of assigned area at least once every other day, more if needed. Keep all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in good state of preservation.
  3. Clean surface areas.
  4. Scrub and disinfect floors and fixtures in restrooms daily. Check restrooms throughout the day. Replace soap and paper supplies.
  5. Dust flat counter surfaces, bookcases, window ledges, telephones and tables as needed.
  6. Clean and disinfect glass areas, lockers and drinking fountains daily.
  7. Cooperate with all staff.
  8. Launder uniforms, towels, etc., every other day, more if needed.
  9. Empty wastebaskets in assigned area daily.
  10. Set up and organize meeting rooms as assigned.
  11. Maintain and replace light bulbs and fluorescent tubes, as needed.
  12. Move supplies and equipment as required.
  13. Report and perform minor repairs throughout the assigned building.
  14. Clean and maintain District walks and entryways.
  15. Operate floor care equipment.
  16. Maintain a positive rapport with students, staff, parents and community members.
  17. Maintain confidentiality in the school operation.
  18. Keep busy throughout work shift using time wisely and completing tasks in a timely fashion.
  19. Ensure proper and consistent classroom, gym, wrestling/weight room, hallways, office/other areas, and restroom sanitation consistent with District guidelines and expectations.
  20. Perform other job related duties as assigned.

  1. Must be able to work in a standing and/or walking position for long periods of time.
  2. Must be able to frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds efficiently.
  3. Must have manual dexterity to operate and handle equipment related to all aspects of maintenance or custodial tasks in a way that ensures safety while performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms, stand, talk or hear, taste or smell, walk and use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate tools or controls.

  1. The noise level in the work environment is moderately loud.
  2. Must have ability to tolerate chemicals in commercial strength detergents and cleaning solutions.

Terms of Employment : Days of service as specified in contract language. Salary established by the Board.
