ABOUT THIS POSITION

Over 52 million passengers traveled through Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in 2024, one of the busiest airports in the country in the nation's 5th largest city. Sky Harbor is the largest of three airports in the Phoenix Airport System (Phoenix Sky Harbor, Deer Valley, and Goodyear airports) which is operated by the City of Phoenix Aviation Department and has an economic impact over $44 billion annually.

The Aviation Department has a vacancy for a Building Maintenance Worker - Plumber position. This role will have extensive journey-level experience in the maintenance, repair, alteration, and remodeling of buildings, offices, houses, and other facilities. Assignments involve numerous trades and skills, such as rough carpentry, cabinet making, plumbing, routine electrical or welding work, roofing, painting, drywall finishing, and concrete/masonry work.

A high degree of competence in several trades is expected with more than one at or above the acceptable skilled level. Work is performed independently or in teams and could involve occasionally serving as a crew leader over other Building Maintenance Workers for specified projects. This position is responsible for determining appropriate work methods, tools, and materials used for most assignments. Work involves occasionally serving as a crew leader over other Building Maintenance Workers for specified projects, and some positions regularly lead other Trades Helpers, Semiskilled Workers, Laborers, and Groundskeepers.

Work schedules available: Monday - Thursday, 7:30PM - 5:30AM and Sunday - Wednesday, 3:30PM - 1:30AM.

SALARY

Pay Range: $27.49 to $40.61 per hour.

Hiring Range: $27.49 to $38.68 per hour.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Three years of skilled level experience in building maintenance and repair work, with a high level of proficiency in at least two of the building trades.

  • Completion of an acceptable apprenticeship program.

  • OR Six years of trades experience, three of which are at the skilled level, with a high level of proficiency in at least two of the building trades.

  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

  • Current Backflow Tester & Repair Certifications are required to be eligible for interview.

  • Working conditions:

  • Moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds may be required.

  • Working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, holidays, evenings, and on-call may be required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

  • Commercial service plumber experience.
  • Experience with painting and drywall.
  • Experience working in an airport or a secure environment.
  • Experience with floor covering installation including ceramic tile, carpet, and VCT.
  • Experience performing skilled work in the maintenance, repair, alteration, and remodeling of buildings, offices, houses, or other City facilities.
