Facility Maintenance Technician

The City of Chesapeake is seeking a skilled and dependable Facility Maintenance Technician to support the Department of Human Services/Social Services located at 100 Outlaw Street. This position is responsible for performing a wide range of maintenance and repair tasks to ensure the safety, functionality, and upkeep of the facility and its related structures.

Working under general supervision, the Facility Maintenance Technician will perform maintenance duties related to electrical, carpentry, mechanical, plumbing, painting, masonry, and outdoor structures. The work is performed according to established procedures with some independent decision-making on how and when to complete tasks.

Typical Tasks Include:

  • Inspecting the building, fixtures, equipment, and outdoor areas for maintenance needs
  • Performing installation, construction, repair, and modifications of building systems
  • Estimating materials and determining tools or support equipment needed for each job
  • Conducting indoor maintenance such as painting, plumbing, carpentry, mechanical and electrical work
  • Performing outdoor maintenance such as concrete work, roofing, and structure repair
  • Maintaining logs, activity reports, and other required documentation
  • Performing other related duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Requires high school diploma or GED and any combination of education and experience equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Requires a valid driver's license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards. Special skills or equipment certification may be required.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of six months of related, full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to confined spaces. Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience using any type of computer generated work order system a plus
