General Definition of Work

Performs intermediate semiskilled work ensuring proper sanitation, cleaning, and maintenance of City buildings, inspecting work, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor.

Special Note:

May require non-standard or rotating shift work to include days, nights, weekends, and holidays.

The ideal candidate will have experience performing custodial activities. Be detail oriented and have good time management and organizational skills, as well as follow through. It is essential that they take ownership of the responsibility for the cleaning of City facilities.

Essential Functions

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required and are subject to change as needs and job requirements change. Position assignments may vary. Cleans and sanitizes restrooms, locker rooms, and customer counters. Stocks supplies.

Vacuums, sweeps, and mops floors daily, including hallways, offices, meeting rooms, and restrooms.

Performs monthly, semi-annual, and annual floor cleaning, polishing, and maintenance.

Empty and clean trash containers and recycling from offices to main containers and outside dumpsters.

Reviews Custodian I areas of work and performs duties as needed or required.

Maintains exterior areas and entryways, which may include sweeping walkways and cleaning mats, picking up and disposing of trash and debris.

Cleans windows.

Operates and maintains motor vehicles or other work-related equipment requiring a valid driver's license.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED and moderate experience in janitorial services, operations, and techniques, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Qualifications

Must meet and maintain all training and education requirements for the position.

Valid Driver's License of the appropriate class.

The Custodian position will require a second background check to be conducted by the police (due to the sensitivity of the police facility). The offer of employment is contingent upon successfully passing the background checks.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

General knowledge of building cleaning practices, supplies, and equipment and the ability to use them economically and efficiently.

Ability to understand oral and written directions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public; ability to read and write; physical ability to perform heavy manual work; ability to work independently; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

Working Conditions

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, using hands to finger, handle or feel and reaching with hands and arms, frequently requires stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions and occasionally requires speaking or hearing, climbing or balancing and tasting or smelling; work has standard vision requirements; no special vocal communication skills are required; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm's length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to vibration and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

The succeeding examination processes may be required: training and experience, testing, panel interview, employment eligibility verification (EEV) requirements, personnel evaluation profile (PEP), polygraph test, background investigation and alcohol/drug screening test. Appointment subject to successful background investigation and City paid post-employment medical examination after offer of employment has been made.
