Skilled trades work usually at the journeyman level in several of the trades.

Work involves duties which require the application of skills generally of a journeyman level in several different trades, particularly those of carpentry, painting, electricity, plumbing and masonry. General instructions are received from a supervisor regarding work to be done; however, an employee in this class is expected to use considerable discretion in determining proper work methods. Inspections are made of completed work from time to time to determine quantity and quality of work done. Supervision may be exercised over a small group of semiskilled workers. Positions in this class differ from those in the class of Maintenance Mechanic Helper because of the higher skill required as well as the greater independence of action exercised. Performs rough and finished carpentry in tearing down and rebuilding partitions, putting in new floors and ceilings, building new equipment sheds and recreational facilities.

Repairs doors, locks, window frames, tables, chairs and other wooden equipment. Operates and maintains wood lathe, sander, power saw and related power and hand tools.

Performs maintenance and repair work on all types of cooling equipment such as air conditioners, refrigerators and dehumidifiers, on heating equipment such as steam boilers, laundry equipment, kitchen equipment and gas heaters. Makes plumbing repairs on water systems.

Performs maintenance and repair work on electrical motors and equipment involved in the operation of bridges and sewer pumping stations.

Performs masonry work, laying concrete blocks and tile, and pouring concrete.

Performs a variety of painting tasks, preparing surfaces, priming, and painting.

Performs a variety of welding tasks, fabricating hand railings, columns, fences and gates.

Performs a variety of tasks at stadium, removal and replacing beams, steel columns and struts and caring for Poly-turf.

Performs other related work as required.
  • A high school diploma or its equivalent

  • Three (3) years experience in building construction, maintenance, and repair work. Completion of apprenticeship program and attainment of Journeyman rank in one of the building trades is desirable.

  • A Valid Driver's License from any state (Equivalent to a State of Florida Class E or higher) may be utilized upon application, (See "Note and Documentation Sections" below).

  • Equivalent combination of education and experience beyond a high school diploma or its equivalent and two (2) years of the required experience.

If degree/diploma does not reflect the academic major on its face, transcripts indicating degree completion must be submitted. Audit/Academic reports are not accepted as substitutions for college transcripts.
  2. To qualify under the equivalency clause, applicant must provide proof of education in one or more of the following applicable forms: copy of college/university transcripts of sixty (60) college credits or more, from an accredited institution, OR any higher accredited degree such as an Associate's, Bachelor's, Master's degree or higher.
  3. Valid Driver's License from any state (Equivalent to a State of Florida Class E) may be utilized upon application, however prior to appointment a State of Florida Driver's License (Class E or higher) must be presented to the Department of Human Resources and must be maintained valid through employment

Selection Preference for City Residents: In accordance with APM 2-02, applicants for classified positions who are City of Miami residents and new hires will receive preference in selection from interview ranking bands provided that any two (2) of the following documents are submitted with the employment application and again at time of interview:

B. Valid Florida Driver License or State-issued I.D.
C. Property Tax Statement dated within 1 year of the date of submission
D. Properly executed valid lease agreement
