The Laundry Assistant is responsible for performing a variety of general laundry duties in order to provide quality, clean laundry service.
Essential Functions Statement(s)
Performs all general laundry duties
Inventories clothing and personal items brought in with new residents and marks with proper identification, as requested
Picks up brutes with soiled linen from each wing throughout shift
Prepares articles for washing by unbuttoning, turning pockets out and unrolling sleeves
Sorts soiled laundry into appropriate loads for washing
Follows standard washing procedures to add soap solution, bluing and other chemicals to wash
Washes contaminated linens separately from other linens
Dries linens and residents' clothing in dryer
Presses garments
Checks condition of linens for worn spots or tears
Folds linen and returns sufficient amount of linen to clean linen room on each wing for needs of day
Distributes laundry to appropriate resident
Follows policy on unmarked clothing
Maintains equipment used in performing duties
Cleans washers and dryers, dryer lint filters and soap dispensers at end or near end of shift or per policy
Cleans brutes and replaces liners daily as assigned
Assists in quarterly inventory process
Records laundry weights monthly
Follows all appropriate safety and security guidelines, procedures and protocol for residents in all special care units
Maintains appropriate, effective communication with residents, and with residents' family or other significant relationships
Performs all other duties as assigned or directed

Skills & Abilities
Education: High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED): Preferred
Experience: No prior experience necessary
Computer Skills: Must possess basic computer skills
Other Requirements: Must be able to read, write, understand and speak the English language and follow instructions; Previous experience preferred but not required; Ability to operate/utilize basic laundry equipment and supplies; Must be able to work with other laundry aides, elderly residents, families and other health care staff members; Must be able to adhere to all terms and conditions set forth in the United Church Homes Employee Handbook
