Job Summary The Custodian Team Lead supports the IU Student Health Center by leading custodial efforts that ensure a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for student care. In addition to performing routine and deep cleaning duties, the role provides daily oversight, task coordination, and quality assurance for custodial staff to maintain departmental standards. Department Specific Responsibilities Keeps buildings and facilities in clean and orderly condition. Keeps medical exam rooms and areas clean and sanitized. Performs heavy cleaning duties, such as cleaning floors, shampooing rugs, washing walls and glass, and removing refuse. Performs routine light maintenance activities, notifies management of need for repairs. General Responsibilities Provides structure and oversight for entry-level employees. Prioritizes work assignments within a given routine and assigns tasks. Participates in performing custodial duties. Monitors work for quality, accuracy, and completeness to ensure compliance with departmental sanitation standards. Manages and controls equipment and chemicals assigned to a given routine. Maintains and orders supplies. Inspects assigned areas and equipment to ensure that the quality of care is consistent with departmental standards. Reports staff concerns, areas of deficiency, and any need for building maintenance to the shift supervisor for appropriate action. Trains new employees on cleaning procedures, equipment, products, departmental policies, and standards. May review and approve timesheets. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Assists with snow removal activities as necessary. Qualifications EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE Required High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED) with 1 year of custodial experience and demonstrated leadership skills OR General knowledge at the high school level with 2 years of experience at the foundational custodian level and demonstrated leadership skills SKILLS Required Ability to work in a safe and efficient manner Proficient communication skills Maintains a high degree of professionalism Demonstrated time management and priority setting skills Demonstrates a high commitment to quality Possesses flexibility to work in a fast paced, dynamic environment Seeks to acquire knowledge in area of specialty Highly thorough and dependable Demonstrates a high level of accuracy, even under pressure Excellent organizational skills Ability to represent the company with external constituents Ability to drive multiple projects to successful completion Strong verbal communication and listening skills Ability to build strong customer relationships Knowledge of effective leadership techniques Ability to lead people and processes Knowledge of general cleaning procedures and equipment Ability to operate and use standard cleaning equipment and materials Ability to perform work that requires medium to heavy physical effort Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions Ability to use a computer Ability to work with wide variety of cultures and backgrounds Working Conditions / Demands This role requires the ability to remain in a stationary position as well as the ability to move about the workplace for long durations. It requires effective communication, the ability to operate machinery, tools, and controls. The role requires the ability to ascend/descend ladders/stairs, and to position one's self in low level positions, detect a variety of chemicals and/or gases. The role requires the ability to ascend to rooftops and move in tight spaces to perform and complete inspections. This position requires the ability to move and transfer equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation. Must be available to work during inclement weather (i.e. snow and ice) when weather emergencies dictate that the department is needed to take care of the campus. Work Location IU Bloomington campus. This is an in-person position.
