As a Maintenance Worker for the City of Springfield, you will have the opportunity to serve the community working in a variety of capacities and departments such as Environmental Services or Public Works. Maintenance Workers assist in the repair and maintenance of city streets, sewers, waterways, bridges, parks, right-of-ways, watersheds, grounds, and/or other city property. Maintenance Workers also perform equipment operation such as dump trucks, salt spreaders, snow plows, and other similar equipment.

Interviews are tentatively scheduled mid July, 2025. If selected for an interview, you will receive communication from us to schedule a time.

Experience, Education, and Training
  • A minimum of one year of experience (or 6 months if candidate has direct City of Springfield experience in one of these areas) in the operation of dump trucks, flusher trucks, skid-steer loaders, front-end loaders or comparable equipment operation;
OR
  • One year of maintenance and/or construction work comparable to work completed in the Parks, Environmental Services & Public Works Departments in such areas as street/road work, grounds work, maintaining sports fields, agriculture, and sewer or utility pipe line work.

Licensing/Certification
  • Must take and pass, at minimum, the written portion of the Commercial Drivers License (CDL) exam (permit) within 90 days of hire.
  • A class "B" CDL, at minimum, must then be obtained within the probationary period.
  • Some assignments require the driver to have the ability to operate a vehicle with airbrakes.
  • Candidates must possess endorsements such as tanker and/or a class "A" license in order to qualify for some assignments.
  • Candidates must obtain and maintain CPR and First Aid Certification within the probationary period.
