The Canopy by Hilton, located in the heart of vibrant Downtown Grand Rapids, is seeking a talented Banquet Captain to help oversee and implement banquets and events at our unique full-service hotel. This position will support both our sales & events team and culinary team in executing memorable hotel events and banquets, while also leading our dedicated banquets team. JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for the supervision and control of hotel banquet events.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Supervise and coordinate the activities of banquet personnel. including recommend disciplinary actions, promote teamwork and employee morale, assign and delegate duties.
- Ensure compliance with MIOSHA standards to provide a safe work environment
- Knowledge and implementation of all banquet and food and beverage brand standards
- Assist Director of Food and Beverage with: department meetings and weekly work schedules
- Complete additional administrative duties that include: inventory and ordering.
- Attend and participate in staff and BEO meetings
- Knowledge of all emergency procedures and how to act on them
- Adhere to proper key control procedures
- Report any unusual occurrences or requests to the General Manager immediately
- Prepare coffee breaks, carts, and stations with appropriate food and beverages as stated in Banquet Event Order
- Prepare tables, action stations, buffets, service carts, dessert table/carts and cordial carts
- Communicate additional meal requirements, allergies, dietary needs, and special requests to the kitchen
- Serve guests according to time frame established and proper etiquette
- Ensure courses are cleared and tables are properly crumbed
- Respond to and try to fulfill any special banquet event arrangements
- Replenish buffet items to ensure consistency and freshness in presentation
- Monitor tableware to ensure it is presentable to guests. Monitor and maintain cleanliness, sanitation, and organization of assigned station and service areas
- Bus tables by removing and separating tableware, plateware, glassware, and flatware
- Ensure uniform and personal appearance are clean and professional, maintain confidentiality of proprietary information, protect company assets
- Welcome and acknowledge all guests according to company standards, anticipate and address guests' service needs, assist individuals with disabilities, and thank guests with genuine appreciation
- Speak with others using clear and professional language. Support team to reach common goals
- Ensure adherence to quality expectations and standards

REQUIRED/PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Minimum of 1-2 years of Food & Beverage experience
- Previous banquet experience is preferred
ADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY QUALIFICATIONS
Satisfactory criminal background screening required – Valid driver’s license and safe driving record may be required
SUPERVISORY RESPONSBILITY
This position may manage other bistro staff members.

EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK
This position requires variable hours based on the needs of the hotel including nights and weekends.
