The Nutrition Service Department is responsible for providing nutritious meals to both residential and day students. The unit serves three meals daily, along with snacks, meals for extracurricular activities, and catered events. It also supports students with multiple disabilities by implementing individualized feeding plans. The department ensures that all food service operations meet or exceed local, State, and Federal nutrition standards, contributing to the overall health, well-being, and academic success of CSDB students.

Manage and Administer the Nutrition Service Department
  • Oversees daily operations of the Nutrition Service Department, ensuring the timely preparation and service of three nutritious meals, snacks, and additional food items for students each day.
  • Coordinates food service support for special campus events and activities.
  • Monitors updates from the Colorado Department of Education (CDE) and ensures the departments full compliance with all current nutrition standards and regulations.
  • Maintains accurate and audit-ready nutritional records.
  • Leads the hiring process for departmental vacancies, including forming interview panels, developing questions, and making job offers in accordance with school policies.
  • Leverages external resources to enhance menu options while staying within nutritional and budgetary guidelines.
  • Completes required certifications, including ServSafe and CPR, upon hire.
  • Utilizes a broad range of regulatory and institutional resources, including State and Federal nutrition guidelines, CDE Child Nutrition standards, CSDB policies and procedures, El Paso County regulations, and input from the CSDB Food Council and other online resources.

Purchase Food

  • Works with food and supply vendors to secure competitive pricing and reliable delivery of products.
  • Orders USDA commodities according to State procedures and incorporates them into school menus to support cost efficiency.
  • Ensures food is stored according to Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) standards to maintain food safety.
  • Limits orders to twice per week to manage costs and optimize inventory control.
  • Verifies invoices upon delivery to confirm correct items, quantities, and prices.
  • Ensures that lead cooks follow HACCP procedures for receiving and storing food safely.

Plan Menus, including Special Diets
  • Plans menus in compliance with the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, ensuring all meals meet the required nutritional standards.
  • Strives to provide a wide variety of meal options while adhering to nutritional guidelines.
  • Posts monthly menus on the school website and the staff SharePoint, providing a text version for accessibility.
  • Publishes a monthly Nutritional Newsletter containing healthy recipes and related information for students, staff, and families.
  • Maintains a log of students special diets and ensures all dietary restrictions are followed, sharing the log with the nursing staff for consistency.
  • Develops customized menus for students with special dietary needs, coordinating with the nursing staff to ensure compliance.
  • Provides counseling to students on nutritional choices and special diets as needed.
  • Runs nutritional analysis through the NutriKids program to ensure that the meal offerings meet all necessary nutrient requirements.
  • Communicates with doctors' offices to clarify any issues related to medical statements regarding special diets.
  • Acts as a liaison between parents and the school regarding students food preferences or other dietary needs.

Manage Budget

  • Oversees and manages the food service budget, ensuring expenditures are within the allocated limits and tracking costs effectively.
  • Collaborates with dorm staff to purchase food when the food service budget allows.
  • Tracks and monitors the food service budget weekly to avoid overspending.
  • Modifies the menus when food prices increase, adjusting purchases to remain within budget while meeting all nutritional requirements.
  • Works with vendors for bulk purchasing or substitutes to ensure cost-effective menu planning without compromising quality.
  • Maintains detailed records for budgetary audits, including documentation dating back three years and the current year.
  • Monitors daily production records and adjusts food quantities based on leftover documentation to minimize waste.

Supervise Staff

  • Monitors and evaluates the performance of food service staff, restructuring staffing patterns, as necessary.
  • Completes performance reviews and evaluations to ensure staff meet departmental standards and goals.
  • Provides coaching, feedback, and training to staff to improve performance and adherence to policies.
  • Develops and maintains department tools and resources, including handbooks, procedure books, and reference materials for staff.
  • Ensures that all meals are served on time and that schedules for meals and snacks are adhered to.
  • Promotes a safe working environment by ensuring that staff follows all safety procedures.

Oversee Laundry Department / Budget
  • Manages and coordinates the laundry operations for the department, ensuring clean linens are available as required.
  • Collaborates with laundry staff to maintain cleanliness, safety, and the appropriate inventory of linens.
  • Oversees the laundry department's budget, ensuring costs are controlled and resources are used efficiently.
  • Assesses the condition of laundry equipment and arranges for repairs or replacement as needed.
  • Ensures that all laundry procedures meet health and safety standards, including the proper handling and sanitizing of linens.
  • Works to minimize waste and maximize the lifespan of linens, purchasing new items only when necessary.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience Only:

Five (5) years of relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned to this position

OR

Education and Experience:

A combination of related education and/or relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned equal to five (5) years

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certified Food Protection Manager Certification: As per the Colorado Retail Food Establishment Rules and Regulations (Citation 2-102.12 & 2-102.20), at least one employee in food preparation and service must hold this certification, obtained through an ACCR program.
  • Food Safety Training Certification: At least 8 hours of food safety training is required either within 5 years prior to the start date or within 30 calendar days of employment. The CDE's "Food Safety in Schools" online training fulfills this requirement.
  • Dietary Manager Certification: This is considered a plus.
  • ServSafe Certification upon hire.

Additional Skills:

  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) at the Survival skill level or the applicant must be willing and able to attain proficiency at the required level within a specified period, as demonstrated by an appropriate assessment.
  • A courteous, professional, and helpful attitude as a CSDB representative.
  • Ability to respond positively to feedback ,work effectively in teams or independently, and demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Technology proficiency: Ability to assess and apply technology effectively, utilizing computer software such as e-mail, internet, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and the willingness to stay current with technological developments as required.
