Job Description
General Functions
Performs a variety of duties in preparing and servicing food and assisting the Food Service Supervisor in coordinating activities of food service employees.
The employee in the position allocated to this class is responsible for assigning and directing lower graded employees in accomplishing routine tasks. Duties include preparing and serving food in the kitchen and dining facility for patients and employees and assuming responsibility for efficient operation during off-shift hours and in the absence of the Food Service Supervisor.
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Food Service Supervisor and is reviewed for conformance to prescribed policies and procedures.
Representative Duties/Assignments
- Assists in inventorying food supplies and maintaining lists of supplies to be purchased.
- Sets up serving line and assists in the serving of prepared food.
- Cooks and bakes foods from prepared menus for regular and special diet patients.
- Assists in cleaning kitchen equipment and inspects work areas for maintenance of proper cleanliness standards.
- Mixes liquid food formulas as directed by physicians or dieticians.
- Assumes responsibility for efficient operation of dietary section during off-shift hours and in absence of Food Service Supervisor.
- Performs related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications
One month of experience in institutional cooking.
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of the materials, equipment and methods used in preparing food on a large scale.
Knowledge of sanitation and personal hygiene standards required in food preparation and service.
Knowledge of a variety of standard cooking recipes and the ability to work therefrom.
Ability to work under conditions of high temperature.
Ability to operate standard cooking equipment and to use kitchen and cooking utensils in a large-scale food preparation.
Ability to coordinate workers engaged in food service activities.
Ability to follow and transmit oral and written instructions.

Pay Grade: 010 - From $17.57 to $19.55
