Harrison Township School District (PreK-6) in Gloucester County has a opening for a full-time custodian for cleaning and maintenance of elementary school buildings.

Qualification: Knowledge of plant operation and maintenance, cleaning methods and procedures, heating and ventilation and proper handling of hazardous materials. Black Seal license preferred with previous work-

related experience.

Job Goal: To provide students and staff with a safe, clean and comfortable school environment that is efficiently operated.

Performance Responsibilities:

  1. Open/close the building(s) each day. Determine before leaving that all doors and windows are secured, alarm set and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off.

  2. Keep building(s) and premises, including sidewalks, driveways and play areas neat and clean at all times.

  3. Operate heat, ventilation and air conditioning systems to provide temperatures appropriate to the season and to ensure economical use of fuel, water and electricity.

  4. Check daily to ensure that all exit doors are open and all panic bars are working properly during hours of building occupancy.

  5. Display the U.S. flag during school hours.

  6. Clean and dust classrooms, offices, libraries and faculty rooms daily, empties wastebaskets in these areas.

  7. Clean corridors after each school day and during the day when the condition requires it.

  8. Clean and sanitizes bathroom fixtures daily, and replenish paper and soap supplies as needed.

  9. Clean and sanitize all drinking fixtures daily.

  10. Clean cafeteria dining area after use.

  11. Clean and wash kitchen floor daily after use.

  12. Shovel, plow, salt and/or sweep sidewalks, steps, driveways and parking areas as necessary.

  13. Keep the grounds free from rubbish and debris.

  14. Clean chalkboards daily.

  15. Move furniture or equipment within the building(s) as required for various activities as directed by the School Business Administrator/Board Secretary, Principal and/or evening Custodian.

  16. Keep all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation.

  17. Clean all windows on both the inside and outside as scheduled.

  18. Prepare playing fields, grounds and other necessary facilities for athletic and other school activities, as assigned.

Maintenance Functions:

  1. Conduct an on-going program of general maintenance, upkeep and repair, making minor repairs and reporting major repair needs promptly to the School Business Administrator/Board Secretary and/or evening Lead Custodian.

  2. Perform grounds-keeping chores including grass cutting, tree trimming, leaf raking and removal of litter, to maintain the grounds in a safe and attractive condition, as assigned.

  3. Conduct an on-going program of general maintenance, upkeep and general repair on all maintenance department equipment, including motorized equipment, tools, and transportation machinery and equipment.

  4. Conduct inspections of building(s) and equipment, making repairs within scope and advising School Business Administrator/Board Secretary of any unsafe conditions regarding physical plant.

  5. Inspect and maintain fire alarm systems and fire extinguishers on a regularly scheduled basis.

  6. Maintain such records as are required by policy or by law.

Other Functions:

1.. Obey all fire/safety and environmental laws and regulations relating to the plant operation.

  1. Comply with all laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, waste and debris.

  2. Recommend for purchase necessary equipment and supplies, and maintains an inventory of them.

Terms of Employment: 12-month salary and work year to be established by the Board of Education.

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Non-Instructional Staff.
