JOB SUMMARY
Under the general direction of a superior, performs supervisory work in the cleaning and maintenance of a large school or City-owned facility or building. Has immediate responsibility for the large public schools or City-owned facilities or buildings, having the more complex operational maintenance problems, supervises, directs and participates in the work of subordinate custodial personnel; does related work as required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Performs related duties as required.
- Makes regular inspection of buildings and grounds to maintain proper cleaning and maintenance schedules.
- Assigns cleaning and maintenance work schedules for day and evening shifts of all subordinate custodial personnel.
- Makes recommendations to superior for improvements, and new equipment purchases.
- Trains new employees in basic duties and methods of custodial work.
- Ensure that buildings are heated, cleaned, locked and unlocked for day or evening activities.
- Attends staff meetings to provide and receive information from superiors, coordinates changes in work schedules with administrative personnel.
- Keeps records of supplies and equipment required for the daily operation of the school/facility building.
- Keeps records and makes reports of all activities in and around assigned building complex.
- Assists in cleaning and maintenance activities which pertain to custodial staff, giving special attention to the more complex problems involved with particular repairs.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER ATTRIBUTES
- Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Thorough knowledge of cleaning methods, materials and equipment.
- Thorough knowledge of the principles of fire safety and systems involved in the care and protection of buildings.
- Ability to make general maintenance repairs.
- Ability to supervise, direct the work of subordinates.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Knowledge of A.H.E.R.A. State mandated asbestos management plan, procedures for monitoring of potential asbestos material with school facilities.
- Knowledge of State mandated "Right to Know Law and Hazardous Communications Act" for compliance by maintaining records and proper handling of chemicals and/or hazardous cleaning supplies.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Two (2) years' experience as a Head Custodian I with the City of Stamford.
SCOPE OF EXAMINATION: There will be a written examination weighted 100% which will test for the following Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Thorough knowledge of cleaning methods, materials and equipment.
- Thorough knowledge of the principles of fire safety and systems involved in the care and protection of buildings.
- Ability to make general maintenance repairs.
- Ability to supervise and direct the work of subordinates.
- Ability to understand and follow instructions.
- Ability to interpret codes and regulations pertaining to asbestos management and the use of chemicals and hazardous cleaning supplies.
