SUMMARY OF CLASSIFICATION
Under supervision from the Streets Crew Leader, operates heavy motorized equipment used in public service maintenance and construction operations; participates in all activities of repair and construction when heavy motorized equipment is needed; does other related work as required.
BUDGETARY RESPONSIBILITIES
None.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
Operates vehicles and equipment such as trucks, excavators, graders, loaders, backhoes, bulldozers, and various other equipment; reads and understands written job instructions and plans; prepares reports; uses good judgement to work safely and use equipment properly; lifts and carries up to 100 pounds, and pulls, pushes, or drags up to 150 pounds of repair equipment or while hooking up or doing minor maintenance on equipment; crawls, climbs, kneels, squats, stoops, and bends freely when driving or participating in repairs and construction; sits or stands for extended periods of time; hear clearly when working around equipment and in traffic; work outdoors in extreme temperatures including heat, cold, temperature swings, and inclement weather; some exposure to dust, fumes, and loud noises that are routinely encountered in maintenance and construction operations, using proper safety precautions.
Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor; cleans equipment. Controls traffic at work sites by flagging to guide traffic through work area, as required or assigned.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
Subject to after hours call out for emergency situations (including inclement weather) safely operates hand tools including hand saws, skill saws, bolt cutters, picks, axes, air compressors, jackhammers and other equipment.

Communicates effectively and courteously with other city employees and general public.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:
Basic knowledge of light to heavy-equipment operating principles; working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to light to heavy equipment operations; working knowledge of the methods, materials and tools used in street and utility maintenance work. Possess mechanical aptitude to make minor repairs and adjustments to assigned equipment in the field. Ability to use heavy motorized construction equipment, particularly backhoes and front-end loaders, but also tractors and mowers.
Minimum Education, Experience and Certification:
High school diploma or equivalent is required. At least one year's experience in operating heavy motorized construction equipment preferred.
