Position Summary: Reporting to the Unit Supervisor, the Cook's position plays a vital role in food preparation and service for our student, faculty, and staff lunch program, and for other catered and special events.

Specific Duties Include:

Working with a small team, follow the daily assignments set by the Unit Supervisor

Review weekly lunch menus, special function sheets, recipes, and food production data. Be prepared to scale recipes, if needed.

Demonstrating excellent knife skills and kitchen techniques, prepare a variety of hot food items for the daily lunch menu and special functions according to standardized recipes. Hot food items include entrees, vegetables, starches, soups, sauces, etc., and include a variety of American and global dishes

Be familiar with, and help prepare suitable special meals for students with food allergies or special diets

Assist in line serving or food backup during the lunch period

Operate and clean a variety of kitchen equipment, including food choppers, steam kettles, tilt skillets, grills, ovens, etc

Make efficient use of food items, meeting production needs, and minimizing waste

Ensure the correct cooling, dating, and storage of leftover food

Maintain a clean and organized department, including walk-in coolers and freezers, helping in the dish room when needed, in compliance with ServSafe regulations

When other members of the team are absent, assist in other functions which include, but are not limited to, helping prepare cold food items, planning and submitting orders with vendors, recording production data, and assisting in the dish room area

Participate in any other dining activities, as required. This includes working occasional evening or weekend special catering events, participating in training, etc

Required Skills:

Must enjoy making delicious foods and demonstrate a good knowledge of culinary techniques to prepare and cook food in high volumes, according to safe food handling practices

A service-oriented, motivated individual with the ability to communicate effectively and constructively

Willing to contribute new ideas to our forward-thinking and creative team

Attention to detail and the ability to stay focused and positive under pressure

Good reading and math skills. Basic computer skills are preferred

Ability to stand for long periods. Required to lift up to 40 pounds in weight. Good dexterity skills are required for food production and serving activities

Minimum Job Qualifications:

A High School graduate with a minimum of two years' experience in a foodservice operation in a cooking role

Some formal culinary training and/or ServSafe Certification preferred, but not required

A GA Driver's license preferred, but not required

The Cook's position is a full-time (40 hours per week), non-exempt, 12-month position. Hours are 6:30 am - 3:00 pm Monday to Friday. Employees are expected to contribute to working occasional events during evenings or weekends.

The hourly wage rate is commensurate with education and experience. Benefits are comprehensive.
