Job Purpose: To oversee and ensure the physical upkeep and cleanliness of school buildings, grounds, and furnishings. To effectively communicate & coordinate with all building users.
Duties, Responsibilities, and Accountabilities:
1.Leadership: Trains new custodians and oversees custodial staff's work schedule and duties. Oversees, assists, and ensures all necessary tasks are performed efficiently, effectively, and safely.
2.Communications: Keeps Principal informed of physical site status and requirements. Creates and submits work orders for facility needs beyond the scope of site custodial staff to the Principal for approval. Coordinates with borough maintenance to complete necessary work and completes monthly maintenance reports. Orders custodial supplies and equipment with the approval of the Principal. Contacts sub- custodians as needed. Annual reviews and updates of the school fixed asset inventory.
3.Cleaning: Performs daily or scheduled cleaning of floors, walls, furniture, and fixtures within rooms, halls, offices, and bathrooms. Ensures that school grounds are clean. Performs periodic deep cleaning such as stripping/scrubbing and waxing hard floors and carpet extraction.
4.Maintenance: Perform duties such as replacing lights and ongoing locker repairs such as replacing fasteners, bars, and combination locks and completes the change of all locker combinations annually.
5.Safety & Security: Maintains safe grounds by observing and correcting possible safety hazards such as wet floors and snow-covered or icy sidewalks. Ensures building security by being alert to unusual circumstances and locking doors and windows appropriately.
6.Teamwork: Performs other related duties as required or assigned, such as setting up tables for lunch or preparing facilities for special events. Works cooperatively with school employees, students, and visitors. Will assist in preparing the setup and breakdown of the building for student programs and events.
7.Record Keeping: Maintains an accurate and current building key log. Submits key reports twice yearly. Maintains an accurate, current locker combination log.
8.Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification is required. Requires knowledge of OSHA & fire safety codes & laws. Must follow all required procedures and policies.
9.Maintains accurate time sheets for substitute custodians.
10.Must be willing to perform the job duties outlined in this job description at other Central Peninsula Schools as necessary.
11.Must maintain a current driver's license, a clean driving record, and reliable transportation to all Southern Peninsula Schools.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
1.Requires proven skill in organizing work, instructing others in proper techniques, and providing leadership.
2.Requires interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with the building principal, staff, and other contacts. Requires basic writing ability to complete reports.
3.Requires custodial experience and a thorough knowledge of cleaning equipment, materials, and procedures. Requires physical ability to operate hand-held equipment and to perform active, physically demanding duties, such as moving and setting up furniture daily.
4.Requires basic knowledge of heating, electrical, and plumbing systems and maintenance procedures.
5.Requires attention to detail and ability to recognize safety and security hazards. Requires the ability to perform duties safely.
6.Must have a current driver's license.
7.Requires willingness to perform various job-related duties as situations require. Requires a strong sense of teamwork and the ability to work cooperatively with others.
8.Requires knowledge of OSHA & fire, safety codes & laws & must follow all required procedures and policies.
9.Perform preventative and basic maintenance and repair of custodial equipment.
10.Have knowledge and experience of custodial supplies needed to maintain cleanliness standards.
11.Have experience and knowledge of designing custodial work schedules.
12.Have basic knowledge of operating equipment such as a snow blower, a truck with a snowplow, and a garden-size tractor used for sanding, plowing, and maintenance of school grounds.
13.Work cooperatively with the Principal in providing input on the observation evaluation of custodial staff. The applicant must have a proven, exemplary attendance record in a previous work setting to complete this requirement.
14.Accept additional duties as may be directed by the building principal.
15.Requires basic computer skills.
Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze and interpret general and technical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from supervisors, custodial team, and maintenance department employees.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret various instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and community. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
