About the Division:
The Buildings & Grounds Division (B&G) is responsible for the Capitol Campus and Department of Enterprise Services (DES) managed building operations, stewardship, and historic preservation. B&G provides service to over 42 agencies, maintains, operates and preserves the 486-acre state Capitol Campus in Olympia, including more than 28 buildings, 18 public monuments, over 6,000 parking stalls, four state parks and a 260-acre lake. B&G executes these responsibilities through the following service programs: Facilities Operations, Grounds Operations, Leadership and Admin, Maintenance & Repairs, Support Services (Custodial).
About this Position:
This position works in Washington State Patrol offices and must pass a WSP fingerprint background check.
As a Custodian 1, you will primarily work indoors at various buildings during swing shifts with routine starting and ending times. Custodians may be assigned to graveyard or other shifts to accommodate Legislative Session events or activities or may be required to work earlier shifts to attend training, or other informational meetings or to accommodate facilities activities and events. Incumbents will use prescribed cleaning products and chemicals on a daily basis which may require the use of protective equipment. Tools and equipment are provided along with uniforms.
Please note that this is a physically demanding position. You will need to be able to lift up to 50 lbs. or more; be physically able to stand, walk, stoop, bend, reach, push, pull, kneel; work with a backpack vacuum weighing up to 12lbs on your back for 8 hours, and use other equipment safely as designed. You will receive a uniform which will need to be worn while working and be able to use prescribed chemicals on a daily basis which may require the use of protective equipment. Other job requirements are working in and around building occupants, visitors or other trades personnel; exercise workplace discretion, respecting the privacy and confidentiality of information you may be see, be consistence in attendance and remain in designated work areas during normal work hours. An essential part of this position is to be courteous to public visitors, fellow workers, callers, building occupants, and supervisory and management personnel with whom you may come in contact.
This position is recognized as Continuity of Operations Plans (COOP) Designation - for Disaster or Emergency Recovery. This means that this position may be required to report to work during extreme weather events, including snow events, manmade or natural disaster response, civil unrest, or other emergencies to provide custodial support as needed.
Duties
Some of what you will be doing
Light Duty Specialist
Use designated chemicals and prescribed cleaning products, which may require the use of protective equipment, and tools, spot wipe/clean surfaces, door push plates, glass, walls, fixture marks, dirt, public telephones, and chalk trays
Empty trash cans and replace liners
Dust all appropriate horizontal and vertical surfaces - high to low
Pick up paperclips, paper, pens, and pencils from floors
Vacuum Specialist
Use designated backpack to vacuum all traffic areas, under desks, and in areas where needed
Reposition furniture correctly
Inspect cords, hoses, paper, dome, and cloth filters and replace/rinse as needed
Check/empty trash cans in each office
Secure areas as required
Restroom Specialist
Spray disinfectant and scrub/wipe all fixtures, sinks, mirrors, drinking fountains, floors, urinals and toilets, partitions, and doors
Refill toilet tissue and dispensers
Detail dust, top to bottom, and detail sweep and mop floors
Empty restroom trash
Utility Specialist
Using designated chemicals and prescribed cleaning products, which may require the use of protective equipment and tools
Spray clean glass, impression areas (entrances)
Clean miscellaneous areas/items, and spot clean carpets
Pick up collected trash bags in specified areas
Haul trash to dumpsters
Check stairs and vacuum stairwell aisles
Other
Maintain daily time sheet information
Attend required agency and divisional training and meeting
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
Must be 18 years of age or older
High school diploma or GED
OR
Six (6) months working as a Custodian 1
OR equivalent job(s) work experience
Must have valid driver's license free from serious traffic violations
Must be able to read, write and speak English
Must be able to lift weights of up to 50 lbs. or more
Must be able to stand, walk, stoop, bend, reach, push, pull, kneel work with a backpack vacuum or floor crew machinery for up to 8 hours and other equipment safely as designed
Must wear a uniform and use prescribed chemicals on a daily basis which may require the use of protective equipment
Must be able to work in a crowded, high pressure work environment
Must be able to work in and around building occupants, visitors or other trades personnel
Must exercise discretion in the workplace, respecting the privacy and confidentiality of information found there
Be regular in attendance and remain in designated work areas during normal work hours
Be courteous to public, fellow workers, callers, building occupants, and supervisory and management personnel with whom they come in contact
Required to meet productivity standards, deadlines and work schedule
Make the best use of available time and resources
Clearly see the "bottom line" of customer expectations and ensure that work products meet that bottom line

Special Requirements
Must be able to work a rotating shift. Shifts are 2:00pm-10:30pm and 5:00pm-1:30am. Each rotation is 4 weeks. (3 months on 5:00pm-1:30am and 1 month on 2:00pm-10:30pm shift, repeat)

WAC 446-20-240 Any personnel with unescorted access to encrypted criminal justice information including criminal history record information must meet the training standards established by the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Criminal Justice Information Service (CJIS) Security Policy.
