Recreation & Parks Department

Salary: $20.55 - $33.91 Hourly / $42,744.00 - $70,532.80 Annually

FLSA Position Class: Non-Exempt

Work Schedule: Monday Friday, 7AM 4PM

Job Type: Full-Time

This position is responsible for the maintenance and repairs to City-owned buildings and structures that require carpentry, plumbing, and electrical skills and abilities.

NOTE: Employee may be required to respond to a disaster, either natural or man-made, to serve the citizens of Statesville and meet the needs of the organization, which may result in the assignment of other duties and take precedence over duties described in this job description. This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive.

  • Performs tasks related to the maintenance, care, cleaning, and repair of City-owned or leased buildings.
  • Inspects structures for repairs and prepares cost estimates.
  • Organizes and inspects major building or repair projects with contractors.
  • Performs maintenance on heating and cooling units and maintains service records.
  • Performs minor electrical and plumbing repairs, such as doors/locks, ballasts, bulb replacement, toilet repair, etc.
  • Completes repairs promptly to eliminate any reported OSHA or safety violations.
  • Completes special projects as requested by department heads or immediate supervisor.
  • Compares in-house costs to outside estimates to ensure cost-effective methodologies are followed.
  • Installs light fixtures, lavatories, water heaters, toilets, and related facilities.
  • Develops cost estimates for departmental budgets regarding specific building repairs.
  • Maintains shop and equipment to comply with all applicable OSHA and regulatory requirements.
  • Installs paneling, sheetrock, carpet, builds and installs cabinets, desks, and related carpentry tasks.
  • Installs playground equipment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Two (2) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of buildings.

Requirements

  • Possession of a valid North Carolina drivers license, or any valid drivers license with ability to obtain a North Carolina drivers license within 60 days of establishing a permanent residence in North Carolina.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, and equipment required in the maintenance and repair of buildings.
  • Thorough knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions in the maintenance and repair of buildings.
  • General knowledge of applicable building and fire prevention codes as well as pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Ability to operate machinery and equipment related to maintenance, repair, and alterations of city building facilities.
  • Ability to accurately determine the work required and estimate the work hours, materials, and cost of such work.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare clear and concise reports.
  • Ability to read and interpret building blueprints, specifications, and technical manuals.
  • Ability to communicate ideas clearly, concisely, and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, other departments, contractors, city officials, and the public.

Job Related Physical Activity Requirements

This position involves heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical activity related to this position may require the use of fingers and hands, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for assembly or fabrication of parts at/or within arms length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, use of measuring devices, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.

Working Conditions

The employee is subject to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions such as extreme heat and cold, noise, fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, poor ventilation, oils, cutting fluids, and hazards such as working in high places and exposure to moving mechanical parts.
