The Bethany Community School is an elementary school, grades PK to 6, located in central Bethany on an extensive rural campus. The substitute custodian is under general supervision to perform custodial and general maintenance services required to maintain a clean, attractive, sanitary, and safe facility for students, staff, and the public.
Work Schedule: As needed, Monday thru Friday, Day Shift Hours: 7:00am-2:00pm. Night Shift 2:00pm - 9:00pm
This is a part-time positon to fill vacancies as needed within the normal full-time custodians work schedule.
Pay Rate: $20.00 per hour.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Maintains assigned work areas to ensure a clean, sanitary, safe, and attractive environment (e.g., empty wastebaskets, clean and disinfect, dust, sweep, mop, vacuum, wash windows/mirrors, polish).
- Replenishes classroom and restroom supplies (e.g., paper towels, toilet paper, soap, hand sanitizer) to ensure adequate quantities for daily use.
- Prepares facility and grounds for daily operations (e.g., turn on lights, raise the flag, unlock doors, remove snow, salt icy patches) to ensure the facility is operational and safe for occupancy, depending on work shift.
- May be asked to assist with snow removal as well as maintaining grounds with required edging, trimming, and ice removal, as directed.
- Assists with building operations for building use and events, including setting up, cleaning up, rearranging furniture, locking/unlocking areas for access, and supporting individuals using building areas.
- Follows state, federal, and Board safety practices, policies, and procedures.
- Documents and reports vandalism, maintenance issues and damage, security issues, and safety hazards to Facilities Head. Delivers various supplies, equipment, and packages to appropriate staff.
- Responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns (e.g., facility damage, alarms, spills, bodily fluids, plumbing issues) and takes appropriate actions to resolve them.
- Works cooperatively with District administration, co-workers, school staff, parents, students, and community organizations utilizing District facilities.
- Ensures facilities and grounds are secure by verifying that all windows, doors, storage areas, and gates are locked at the end of the work shift.
- May be asked to assist with summer and seasonal maintenance (e.g., strip/wax floors, move furniture, paint, wash windows, rug cleaning) to complete and/or facilitate summer and seasonal projects.
- Maintains a neat and orderly assigned workroom, ensuring cleaning and maintenance supplies are stocked.
- Completes required federal, state, or District training.
- Other responsibilities as determined by the Facilities Supervisor.
- Must be willing to work extended shifts as well as occasional weekends as necessary (e.g. board meetings, school functions).
Education/Experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- General maintenance experience is preferred.
- Experience with commercial-grade cleaning equipment, supplies, and chemicals is preferred.

- Proficient use of employee technology resources following District policies and procedures (e.g., email, web applications, absence management, student information system, etc.).

- Sedentary to medium strength is needed to exert force up to 50 lbs.
- Frequent traversing and moving inside the office, school, grounds, and tight areas.
