The Opportunity

WSDOT is looking for a highway maintenance professional to entrust with the responsibilities of the Highway Maintenance Lead Worker in Enumclaw, WA. Under the direction of a Highway Maintenance Supervisor, this position is a member of the regional maintenance organization. Operating a wide variety of highway equipment and tools, this position is responsible for leading entry and journey-level Highway Maintenance Workers while regularly performing skilled maintenance tasks throughout WSDOT roadways. The maintenance and repair of highways and highway structures is critical to ensure the safe and efficient movement of people and commerce.

Due to the nature of this work, the Highway Maintenance Lead must also be able to perform hard, physical labor such as moving and transporting heavy objects, negotiating rough and steep terrain, operating heavy equipment, and working in extreme weather conditions. By taking on this role, you are serving a key and vital function to the State of Washington.

What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker 3 will:

  • Lead Highway Maintenance Crews in the daily performance of all maintenance and operations tasks throughout State Highways.
  • Prioritize, plan, schedule, and budget maintenance activities to accomplish the work.
  • Lead, schedule, and direct highway maintenance activities throughout State Highways.
  • Coordinate equipment and personnel with fellow Highway Maintenance Worker 3s.
  • Maintain and submit daily records and reports of maintenance activities, such as: time, equipment, fuel, and oil reports for the personnel and equipment under their jurisdiction.
  • Enter all maintenance activities into computerized systems (e.g., Highway Activity Tracking System (HATS), Work Zone Data base (WZDB), Traffic Sign Management System (TSMS, etc.); review computerized records to ensure accuracy.
  • Train personnel in equipment usage, safety, highway maintenance, and public relations.
  • Arranges for the purchase of repair, or replacement of parts; arranges rental or lease of privately owned equipment.
  • Responsible for ICP inventory and accurate record keeping. Prepare and complete K3 paperwork. Prepare project estimates for all LEMO (Labor, Equipment, Materials, Other) costs.
  • Investigate employee personal injury and equipment damage.
  • Assist in the completion of reporting of accidents in the computerized system (SIIRS)
  • Attend and occasionally lead monthly organization safety meetings.
  • Perform day-to-day highway maintenance operations.

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required :

  • One (1) year of experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker 2 or Maintenance Specialist 3

OR

  • Two (2) years experience as a Maintenance Technician 2, Bridge Maintenance Technician 2 OR Maintenance Specialist 2 OR equivalent combination of experience.
  • Possession of a valid Traffic Control/Flagging card with experience performing traffic control per MUTCD including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging; or obtain Flagger Certification within six (6) months.
  • Possession of a Washington Class A CDL with N endorsement without airbrake restrictions and without an E restriction.
  • Experience in communicating to multiple audiences, both orally and in writing.
  • Experience providing outstanding customer service.
  • Experience in working independently and prioritizing workload, with the ability to handle multiple assignments.
  • Experience using computers, iPads, and Microsoft Office Products.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • High school graduation OR possession of a GED certificate, OR equivalent understanding of TEF owned equipment.
  • Three (3) years of experience in one of the following job classes: Highway Maintenance Worker 2, Bridge Maintenance Technician 2, or Maintenance Specialist 2.
  • Possession of a Plans Reading Certification.
  • At least one (1) year of experience operating and transporting equipment.
  • Knowledge of the surrounding area.
  • Experience operating vehicles weighing 26,000 GVW.
  • Experience leading and/or supervising crews, providing clear direction, and making good decisions in stressful conditions.
  • Washington State Pesticide Applicators License.
  • Backflow Prevention Tester Certification.
  • Crane Certificate.
  • Washington State Traffic Control/Flagging Card
