Salary Range 4,618.00 - 5,904.00 Job Summary Were currently recruiting for a Maintenance Worker - Sewer. Reporting to the Sewer Maintenance Supervisor, the primary responsibilities for the job are to perform skilled work in the construction, maintenance and other activities related to sewer maintenance. The position is expected to work effectively in a team environment and provide quality customer service to the general public.

This is a full-time, regular, non-exempt union position. This position is covered under the provisions of an agreement between the City and the AFSCME union. The schedule for this position is a four 10's flex schedule of 6am - 4:30pm either Mon-Thu or Tues-Fri.

A Maintenance Worker (MW) is expected to obtain a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) within 12-months of employment. The City of Vancouver is committed to investing in our new employees, and scheduling MWs into a commercial truck driving school once the new employee meets probationary expectations. Prior to employment with the City of Vancouver, all new employees will acknowledge understanding of this requirement and agree to a tier-based reimbursement plan if the employee separates from the City within three years of their employment date. Essential Functions:

  • Perform regular inspection on wastewater lines, manholes, and sewer collection systems; operate power rodder, high velocity jet flusher, root foaming equipment, and vac-all truck to clean, flush and restore to operating condition. Drive various city vehicles in a safe and appropriate manner in order to travel efficiently between various assigned worksites.
  • Run video inspection equipment.
  • Assist with pump stations operations, maintenance, and repairs.
  • Interpret wastewater and other utility maps for identifying main sizes, types, and locations. Locate sewer mains for contractors, utilities, and the general public as required
  • Perform routine equipment maintenance and field repair.
  • Assist with root foaming application.
  • Perform traffic control duties such as flagging as necessary.
  • Perform trenchless sewer repairs, regular trenching repairs and manhole repairs.
  • Install new sewer mains, laterals, manholes, and other related sewer installations.
  • May perform other duties as assigned in other departments, i.e. Water, Wastewater, Stormwater, Grounds, Traffic Signs and Striping, Streets, BBC/Greenway.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

Experience and Education

Maintenance Worker:

  • One (1) year of general maintenance experience.
  • Equivalent to a HS Diploma/GED

Senior Maintenance Worker:

  • Two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience performing field maintenance duties in sewer, wastewater, water, drainage, and/or grounds.
  • Equivalent to a HS Diploma/GED

Computer Skills - Beginner level skills in Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel

Required Licenses and/or Certifications

Maintenance Worker:

Possession of:

  • A valid Drivers License

Ability to obtain:

  • Class A commercial drivers license with tanker endorsement within twelve (12) months of hire, permit required within six (6) months of hire
  • Wastewater certification 1 within two (2) years of hire
  • Tanker endorsement within three (3) months of hire
  • Valid CPR/First Aid card within three (3) months of hire;
  • Flagging card within six (6) months of hire;
  • Forklift Certification within six (6) months of hire;
  • Defensive Driving certification within six (6) months of hire.

Senior Maintenance Worker:

Possession of:

  • A valid Drivers License
  • Class A commercial drivers license

Ability to obtain:

  • Tanker endorsement within three (3) months of hire
  • Valid CPR/First Aid card within three (3) months of hire;
  • Flagging card within six (6) months of hire;
  • Forklift Certification within six (6) months of hire;
  • Defensive Driving certification within six (6) months of hire.

Knowledge

  • Methods and techniques of construction, maintenance and repair related to the area Sewer including: maps, pumps, hydraulics mechanics, flushing, and the TV truck.
  • Operational characteristics of mechanical equipment and tools used in the area of sewer
  • Safe work practices
  • Pertinent federal, state and local laws that pertain to worker safety
  • Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment
  • Use of personal computers and basic software

Abilities

  • Perform skilled maintenance, construction and repair work in the area of sewer maintenance
  • Operate a variety of vehicular and stationary mechanical equipment in a safe and effective manner in routine situations
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision
  • Use and operate hand tools, mechanical equipment, and power tools and equipment required for the work in a safe and efficient manner
  • Read and interpret basic maps and blueprints
  • Perform a variety of manual tasks for extended periods of time and under unfavorable weather conditions
  • Perform heavy manual labor
  • Apply good judgment and practical knowledge to resolve unusual or irregular problems in the area of work assigned
  • Perform duties in a manner to maximize public safety in the area of work assigned
  • Work safely with dangerous materials
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions
