Description
UM Campus Dining invites applications for two (2) Sous Chefs to work in the new Lodge Dining Center.
As a Sous Chef, you'll manage daily food preparation and ensure that standardized recipes from our food management system are accurately followed. Be involved in the complete culinary process-from creating and producing a variety of recipes to supervising kitchen staff, including student and classified employees. In this role, you'll support Campus Dining's high standards by overseeing recipe audits, e excellent quality, and proper food handling skills.
You'll bring experience with high-volume cooking, training, and recipe development, using your background to foster a positive, efficient, and safe kitchen environment. Your familiarity with food service equipment, menu presentation, and diverse cuisines will allow you to contribute meaningfully to our dining programs and enhance the overall guest experience.
What You Bring to the Team:
Strong supervisory and management skills
Proficiency with a range of kitchen equipment and knowledge of ethnic cuisines
Experience in training staff, with an emphasis on display cooking and guest engagement
Knowledge of food safety (free ServSafe certification provided within one year)
Ability to handle food purchasing, storage, and inventory for varied menu needs
Excellent written and verbal communication skills

The Lodge Dining Center at the University of Montana is looking for a skilled sous chef to bring leadership, culinary talent, and innovation to our kitchen. This role is vital to the safe production, presentation, and quality of our food. Serving a diverse university community of over 10,000 students, faculty, staff, and visitors, The Lodge Dining Center is UM's largest dining facility, hosting high-volume daily operations and special events. The Lodge Dining Center, with its seven micro-restaurants, roof decks, and inviting spaces, is more than just a place to eat-it's a community hub that fosters connection and culinary excellence. Minimum Qualifications
Professional supervisory experience
Experience with high volume food service operations or fast past private food service operations
Experience with display cooking and presenting menus to guests
Experience with effectively training employees
ServSafe certification or the ability to obtain certification within one (1) year of employment (Employer Provides)
Must have the ability to maintain a positive attitude and be able to work within a diverse workforce
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
High School diploma or equivalent (GED) and two (2) years of a food service experience in kitchens, preferably with high-volume operations
Experience with recipe and menu development and production of high-quality food

Position Number: NEW
Compensation Title: Culinary Services Supervisor II
Work Schedule: Full-time, 1.0 FTE (40 Hours a week), Shifts varies upon unit need, 12 months/year
Probationary Period: Six months minimum
