The City of La Crosse is accepting applications for a full-time Custodian to join the Parking Utility team. The Parking Utility is responsible for overseeing and maintaining the municipally owned ramps and surface lots. These include the Market Square Ramp with a total of 632 spaces, the La Crosse Center Ramp with a total of 893 spaces, the Main Street ramp with a total of 395 spaces, the Riverside Ramp with a total of 903 spaces, and the Pine Street ramp with a total of 606 spaces. When you add in the surface lots, the Parking Utility manages almost 4,000 parking spaces.

The purpose of this position is to perform routine building and grounds maintenance and custodial tasks at the Citys parking ramps and lots. Incumbents perform routine building and grounds maintenance manual labor and operate light equipment such as vacuums, power washers, leaf blowers, weed trimmers and hand-held power tools. The work is performed under the supervision of the Parking Utility Coordinator. The hours for this position are Tuesday through Saturday from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Starting wage for this non-exempt position ranges from $19.85 to $22.74 per hour, depending on candidate qualifications.

Requirements: High school diploma or equivalent, with prior buildings and grounds maintenance experience, or any combination of education and experience which provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities. A valid drivers license is required.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Incumbents perform routine building and grounds maintenance manual labor and operate light equipment such as vacuums, power washers, leaf blowers, weed trimmers and hand-held power tools. The work is performed under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Public Works.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this classification. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Sweeps, mops and vacuums floors, elevators and stairwells.

Washes windows, window ledges, doors and walls.

Cleans parking ramp access-control equipment and assists with equipment maintenance.

Empties trash containers, picks up litter and cleans up waste, including bodily fluids.

Weeds and waters flower beds and landscaping.

Plows snow from parking ramps, lots and alleys; shovels snow from doorways, walkways and entrances. Applies sand, salt and other de-icing products.

Performs routine building maintenance tasks.

Assists with minor plumbing, lighting and electrical repairs.

Assists with installing and removing signs.

May respond to building emergency calls on occasion.

Maintains regular and predictable on-site attendance.

Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

High school diploma or equivalent, with prior buildings and grounds maintenance experience, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities. A valid driver's license is required.

Ability to operate, maneuver and/or steer equipment and machinery requiring simple but continuous adjustments such as pressure washers, vacuums, blowers, brooms, mops, pick-up with plow, snow removal equipment, trimmers, drills, rakes, shovels, etc.

Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet and limbs in performing movements requiring moderate skill, such as cutting, painting and drilling.

Ability to exert moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling.

Ability to recognize and identify similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, shapes, sounds, odors and textures associated with job-related objects, materials and tasks.

Environmental Adaptability

Ability to work under conditions which require exposure to environmental factors such as temperature variations and extremes, odors, toxic agents, bloodborne pathogens, machinery, wetness and/or dust. This exposure may cause some discomfort and presents a risk of injury.
