Maintenance Worker - Refuse and Recycling position will focus on providing exceptional experiences for our park patrons by serving as a member of the Special Events, Refuse and Recycling unit. this position will assist with City park properties and special events refuse disposal.

Work Hours:
This position is expected to work Monday - Friday; 6:00 am- 2:30 pm. This position is required to work a modified week that includes every other weekend.

  • Receives written work orders or verbal instructions from supervisor
  • Inspects materials and sorts items into bins according to type approved for recycling. Loads recyclable materials into recycling truck
  • Places waste material barrels onto lifter and operates lever to dump contents
  • Loads yard waste into rear loader vehicles
  • Assists equipment operator with backing the vehicle into refuse/recycling areas
  • Operates compaction refuse truck and flatbed dump trucks collecting solid waste and recycling from City parks and facilities
  • Loads park facility and roadside trash onto truck, and delivers refuse to landfill
  • Inspects trash containers and repairs as needed, assist with cleanup of special events
  • Assists City in cleanup and repair during inclement weather situations which may require working extended hours during these events
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED and one year of maintenance or customer service experience related to assignment

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

Licensing and Certifications:
  • Valid North Carolina Class C Drivers license with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Valid North Carolina Class B Commercial Drivers license with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire
Knowledge of:
  • Standard practices, methods and materials of assigned work
  • Basic mathematical concepts
  • Basic filing and record-keeping principles
  • Occupational hazards and applicable safety principles and practices
  • Utilizing communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisors, the general public and others to sufficiently exchange or convey information and to receive work direction
ADA and Other Requirements: Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Working Conditions: Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); and frequent exposure to intense noise.
