Senior Parks Maintenance Worker - Parks and Recreation

Purpose of Job

Perform manual labor in the Parks and Recreation Department.

Essential Job Duties

  1. Perform carpentry, maintenance, and construction at city park facilities including concrete pouring, roof repair, and fence construction or repair.
  2. Perform grounds maintenance work along city greenway including routine mowing, storm clean-up, and path clearing.
  3. Maintain and make repairs to city recreational buildings, facilities, and grounds.
  4. Maintain athletic fields by leveling, lining, filling holes, planting grass, mowing, trimming, and landscaping playing areas.
  5. Perform general electrical installation and repairs such as power switches, plugs, and lighting fixtures.
  6. Perform general plumbing installation and repairs, including repairing and replacing pipes and other plumbing fixtures.
  7. Establish and lay out new athletic fields.
  8. Perform routine maintenance on department equipment.

Other Job Duties

  1. Prepare the Center and park facilities for special events including tournaments, banquets, public meetings, etc.
  2. Perform other general grounds maintenance and custodial work.
  3. Perform other related work as required.

Primary Job Challenges

  1. Performing manual labor for extended periods of time in all weather conditions.
  2. Following proper safety procedures for each assignment to ensure completion without injury or damage.

Equipment Operated

  1. Variety of vehicles, equipment and tools including, but not limited to, riding mowers, tractors, weed trimmers, post driver, shovel, pick, broom, rake, chemical sprayer, and field dressing machines.
  2. Standard office equipment including a computer, telephone, printer, and copier.
  3. Automobile and/or truck with two-way radio.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Knowledge of city personnel rules and regulations and departmental policies.
  2. Knowledge of the methods, practices, materials and equipment used in maintenance and construction of buildings and grounds.
  3. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  4. Knowledge of the design and layout of various athletic fields.
  5. Ability to perform continuous manual labor at a steady pace.
  6. Ability to operate manual and powered equipment and tools.
  7. Ability to use the necessary tools and equipment in performance of the required duties.
  8. Ability to interpret and work from sketches and specifications.
  9. Ability to drive and operate an automobile, truck, tractor, and zero turn mower.
  10. Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions.
  11. Ability to understand and apply applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
  12. Ability to establish, communicate and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, city employees, and the general public.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  1. Employee will work both indoors and outdoors and will sit, stand, stoop, walk, lift light and heavy objects (more than 25 pounds).
  2. Employee will be exposed to electrical currents, environmental hazards, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, intense noise, and machinery and its moving parts.
  3. Employee will perform manual labor for extended periods of time.

Qualifications

Education and Experience: High school diploma or G.E.D. with some experience in construction, maintenance, and repair work; or a combination of education and experience equivalent to the required knowledge and abilities.

Required Certifications/Licenses: Must possess a valid Class D driver license issued by the State of Tennessee. Must pass a drug screen and physical examination based on the essential functions of the job given by the Citys designated physician.
