Departmental Overview

Intercollegiate Athletics (IA) at the University of California at Berkeley is responsible for 30 NCAA Division 1 sports programs and approximately 900 student athletes. The Facilities unit provides daily maintenance and operational support to coaches, staff, and participants in athletic programming. Additionally, the Facilities unit maintains a variety of sports venues and spectator facilities.

Overview of Position

This position will help care for some of the finest facilities on campus, including Memorial Stadium, Evans Diamond, Witter Rugby Field, and Edwards Stadium. Share in the excitement of the college experience, and work with some of the best coaches and student-athletes in the country as part of Cal's broad Intercollegiate Athletic program.

Under supervision, the Laborer/Gardener performs maintenance and related functions to athletic fields/venues in support of Athletic Department programs and activities. Scope includes traditional maintenance and repairs to athletic facilities and equipment as well as preventive maintenance at Athletic Department fields and sports venues. The Laborer/Gardener also provides significant support for student athletes, coaches, and spectators through a variety of general tasks related to home events, athletic equipment, and fan amenities.

Responsibilities

  • Handle trash/compost/recycle from public Garden bins, sweep areas as needed, pick up trash and debris
  • Unlocking/locking areas and facilities as needed
  • Assess and address accessibility concerns along common walkways and entries to buildings
  • Mow lawn, weed landscape beds, rake/blow outdoor landscaped areas, remove brush from Athletic Facilities
  • Provide assistance for sporting events including assisting in field preparation, moving equipment and tools.
  • Support Grounds Supervisor with onsite projects as needed
  • Take down or clean-up of event venues. Assist in setups, moving furniture, etc.
  • Other, as assigned by supervisor, including professional development

Required Qualifications
  • Basic understanding of grounds maintenance.
  • Willingness to work outside, with your hands and perform manual labor.
  • Ability to carry 20-25 pounds.
  • Willingness to learn about grounds maintenance and sports turf care.
  • Flexibility to adapt to constantly changing needs as driven by events and programs.
  • Ability to communicate with co-workers and practice solid customer service.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge and experience in repairs and maintenance of equipment.
  • Experience in event preparation or athletic program support.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $24.74 (step 1.0) - $25.76 (step 3.0).
  • This is a 100%, full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
  • This position is non-exempt and paid bi-weekly.
